FLIGHT OPERATIONS

REFRESHER TRAINING
INTRODUCTION TO
AVIATION
AVIATION
Aviation is the activities surrounding mechanical flight and the
aircraft industry.
When it comes to aviation, there is a broad range of
responsibilities within.
It comprises activities at the airport as well as in the aircraft.
It involves ground duties that are required to perform before the
flight takes off, the activities during the flight, and the activities
after it lands.
HISTORY
The original idea of kite-flying from China was the first attempt of
humankind to fly some man-made object high into the air.
During the 19th and the 20th centuries, the experts around the
world experimented continuously and came up with improved flying
machines or aircrafts, which were heavier than air and based on the
principles of aerodynamics.
Most notable names are the Wright Brothers — Orville and Wilbur
Wright.
The Wright brothers made the first sustained, controlled, powered,
and heavier-than-air fight at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina on
December 17, 1903. Orville Wright took the first flight at 120ft high
for 12 seconds.
CIVIL AVIATION
Civil aviation includes all non-military flying, both general
aviation and scheduled air transport.

MILITARY AVIATION
Military aviation comprises military aircraft and other
flying machines for the purposes of conducting or enabling
aerial warfare, including Air Cargo capacity to provide
logistical supply to forces stationed in a war theater or
along a front.
Civil Aviation includes three major categories:
 Commercial air transport, including scheduled and non-
scheduled passenger and cargo flights
 Aerial work, in which an aircraft is used for specialized
services such as agriculture, photography, surveying,
search and rescue, etc.
 General aviation (GA), including all other civil flights,
private or commercial.
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)
A specialized agency of the United Nations that changes the principles
and techniques of international air navigation and fosters the planning
and development of international air transport to ensure safe and orderly
growth.
ICAO headquarters are located in the Quartier International of Montreal,
Quebec, Canada.
Most of the countries in the world are members of the International Civil
Aviation Organization and work together to establish common Standards
and Recommended Practices for civil aviation through that agency.
AIRCRAFT
An aircraft is a vehicle or machine that is able to fly by gaining
support from the air. It counters the force of gravity by using lift of
an airfoil.
Common examples of aircraft include airplanes, helicopters,
airships, gliders, and hot air balloons.

AEROPLANE
An Aeroplane is a fixed-wing aircraft that is propelled forward by
thrust from a jet engine, propeller, or rocket engine.
There are five major manufacturers of civil transport aircraft:
 Airbus, based in Europe
 Boeing, based in the United States
 Bombardier, based in Canada
 Embraer, based in Brazil
 United Aircraft Corporation, based in Russia
Boeing & Airbus concentrate on wide-body and narrow-body jet
airliners.
Bombardier & Embraer concentrate on regional airliners.
AIR TRANSPORT
Air transport is one of the fastest modes of public transport.
Air transport allows people from different countries to cross international
boundaries and travel other countries for personal, business, medical, and
tourism purposes.
AIR SAFETY
Aviation safety means the state of an aviation system or organization in
which risks associated with aviation activities, related to, or in direct support
of the operation of aircraft, are reduced and controlled to an acceptable
level.
It encompasses the theory, practice, investigation, and categorization of
flight failures, and the prevention of such failures through regulation,
education, and training.
AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SERVICES
Air traffic control (ATC) is a service provided by ground-based Air
Traffic Controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and through a
given section of controlled airspace.
Also provide advisory services to aircraft in non-controlled
airspace.
The primary purpose of ATC worldwide is to prevent collisions,
organize and expedite the flow of air traffic. Provide information
and other support for pilots & Operation Personnel.
