2. Inverse Proportion

Two quantities are inversely proportional

when an increase in one causes a decrease in
the other and vice versa.
Speed and travel time are inversely linked
because the faster we travel, the less time we
spend travelling.
Mathematics 6, Quarter 2, Module 3
Lesson 2: Solving Problems Involving Inverse Proportion
Inverse Proportion Examples
1. The faster you drive, the less time it takes
to reach your destination. If you drive
slowly, it takes more time.
2. If you buy more items at a store, the price
per item usually goes down. If you buy
fewer items, the price per item usually
goes up.

Inverse Proportion Examples
3. If more people work on a project, it gets done
faster. If fewer people are working, it takes
longer to finish.
4. When the pipe is smaller, the water pressure is
higher. When the pipe is bigger, the pressure is
lower.
5. The closer you are to a light, the brighter it
looks. The farther away you are, the dimmer it
appears.

PARTITIVE PROPORTION
-a type of proportion in which a whole is
divided into parts according to a given ratio.
• To find a missing value in a partitive proportion:
1) add the terms of the given ratio
2) divide the total by the sum of the terms; and,
3) multiply each term by the value of each unit.
