QUARTER 2 – MODULE 3:
Solving Problems Involving Different Types of Proportion

LESSON 1

DIRECT PROPORTION
Mathematics 6
Week 2, Day 4
October 11, 2024
1. Direct Proportion

Two quantities are said to be in

direct proportion if they increase or
decrease together so that the ratio of
their corresponding values remains
constant.
Mathematics 6, Quarter 2, Module 3
Lesson 2: Solving Problems Involving Inverse Proportion
Direct Proportion Examples
1. Two quantities are said to be in direct proportion if they
increase or decrease together so that the ratio of their
corresponding values remains constant.
2. The amount of fuel a car consumes is directly
proportional to the distance it travels, assuming the
speed and driving conditions remain constant. The
farther you drive, the more fuel you use.
3. In most jobs, the wages are directly proportional to the
number of hours worked. The more hours you work, the
more money you earn.
Mathematics 6, Quarter 2, Module 3
Lesson 2: Solving Problems Involving Inverse Proportion
Inverse Proportion Examples
4. The total cost of groceries is directly proportional to the
quantity you buy. If the price per unit remains the same,
buying more of an item increases the total cost
proportionally.
5. The amount of water used during a shower is directly
proportional to the length of time spent showering. The
longer the shower, the more water is used.
6. The electricity used by an appliance is directly
proportional to the time it is used. The longer the
appliance is on, the more electricity it consumes.
Mathematics 6, Quarter 2, Module 3
Lesson 2: Solving Problems Involving Inverse Proportion
WORD PROBLEM EXAMPLES:

A baker is preparing cupcakes for a

birthday party. The recipe requires 2
cups of sugar for every 12 cupcakes.
How many cups of sugar will the
baker need to make 60 cupcakes?

Mathematics 6, Quarter 2, Module 3

Lesson 2: Solving Problems Involving Inverse Proportion
WORD PROBLEM EXAMPLES:

A group of hikers plans a trip to a

mountain. For every 5 kilometers
they hike, they consume 1 liter of
water. If they plan to hike 25
kilometers, how many liters of
water should they carry?
Mathematics 6, Quarter 2, Module 3
Lesson 2: Solving Problems Involving Inverse Proportion
WORD PROBLEM EXAMPLES:

A farmer is planting corn in a field.

For every 100 square meters of land,
he needs 3 kilograms of fertilizer.
How much fertilizer will he need for a
700 square meter field?

4. If 15 employees can complete a project in
20 days, how many employees would be
needed to finish the same project in 10 days?
Given:
x₁ = 15 employees
x₂ = ????
y₁ = 20 days
y₂ = 10 days Mathematics 6, Quarter 2, Module 3
Lesson 1: Solving Problems Involving Direct Proportion
WORD PROBLEM EXAMPLES:

If a cyclist covers 15 kilometers in

1 hour, how far will they travel in
4 hours at the same speed?
