Diffrential Equation, Niituniversity

1. The document provides 10 problems involving differential equations. The problems cover determining if functions are linearly independent, finding differential equations for given solutions, solving initial and boundary value problems, and more. 2. Specific problems include examining linear independence of sets of functions, showing solutions are linearly independent, determining the number of independent functions on an interval, finding a differential equation with given solutions, and solving initial and boundary value problems. 3. Methods involved finding differential equations for given solutions, writing solutions as linear combinations, using the Wronskian, and employing standard techniques to solve initial and boundary value problems.

NIIT University MAT 101 Tutorial Sheet 3 Differential Equations 25 August 2013 1.

Examine whether the following functions are linearly independent for x 0, (a) 2x, 6x + 3, 3x + 2 (b) sin x, sin 2x, sin 3x (c) ln x, ln x 2 , ln x 3 2. Show that y1(x) = sin x and y2(x) = 4sin x 2cos x are linearly independent solutions of y + y = 0. Write the solution y3(x) = cos x as a linear combination of y1 and y2 . 3. Determine how many of the functions 1, 1+x, x2, x(1-x), x are linearly independent on [0,1]. 4. Show that {e2xcos3x, e2xsin3x} forms a basis to the differential equation 2y - 8y + 26y = 0. 5. Let {y1(x), y2(x)} be the basis of the equation y + a(x) y + b(x) y = 0. Show that the equation can be written as the Wronskian W(y, y1, y2) = 0. 6. Find a differential equation of the form ay by cy 0 for which e3x and e -2x are solutions. 7. Find the general solution of the following differential equations (a) y y 2 y 0 (b) 9 y 12 y 4 y 0 (c) (D2 6D + 18) y = 0 (d) (D2 + 9D) y = 0 8. Solve the following initial value problem y y 12 y 0 , y(0) = 4, y(0) = -5. 9. Solve the following boundary value problem y 2 y 2 y 0 , y(0) = 1, y(/2) = e - /2. 10. Solve y 3 y 4 y 0 if one of the solution is y1 = ex.
