Civn 2009: Materials and Structures Ii Tutorial No. Ii

This document contains 4 questions from a tutorial on materials and structures. Question 1 asks to determine the shape factors for different cross sections, including a rectangular, I-shaped, and circular section. Question 2 asks to determine the bending moment that will cause a specified strain in a beam made of titanium. Question 3 asks to determine the neutral axis position and moment of resistance for a T-beam where the lower part has yielded. Question 4 asks to determine the maximum elastic curvature and fully developed plastic moment of resistance for a given cross section.

TUTORIAL No. II

Q1.

Determine the shape factors for the following sections

Q2.

The beam in Figure is made of alloy of titanium that has a stress- strain diagram that can in part be approximated by
two straight lines. If the material behaviour is the same in both tension and compression, determine the bending
moment that can be applied to the beam that will cause the material at the top and bottom of the beam to be subjected
to a strain 0.05.

Q3.

A T beam is bent till the lower part of the web has yielded at a stress of 300N/mm2 over a depth of 50mm, while
over the rest of the section the stress is proportional to the distance from the neutral axis (as given in the figure).

Q4.

The section shown in Figure has the stress strain properties in flexure as shown in the Figure
(a) What is the maximum curvature that may be applied that still keeps the material within its elastic range
Note: Curvature =1/Radius of curvature
