Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the

included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.

Lesson
Materials Based on Their
1 Ability to Absorb Water
This module will help you understand about classifying
materials according to their properties. They come in different
forms and they come from different types. Solid materials can be
classified on the way they absorb water. Some are porous while
other materials are non-porous.

1. Bath towel is used to _______________________________________.
2. Floor mop is used to _______________________________________.
Activity
I. What to Know:
Identify materials that absorb and do not absorb water
II. What you Need:
1 pc. rubber band 5 spoonful of loam soil
tissue paper hand towel
styro foam
a pail with a half full of water
III. What to Do:
1. Prepare the materials listed above.
2. Place each of the material one at a time in a pail of water.
3. Observe what happen.
4. Write your answers on the table below.
4
Materials can be classified according to their properties.
Solids can be classified as; absorbent or porous and non-
absorbent or non-porous. Non-porous material is also
called water proof. Some porous solids like paper, floor mop
and cloth can absorb water. They are made up of molecules
that have tiny holes that allow air or liquid to pass through.
5
Directions: Fill in the blank with the correct answer. Pick your
answer on the given choices in the box.
