What Is KV of Brushless Motor

KV refers to the revolutions per minute (RPM) of a brushless motor when supplied with 1 volt in the absence of a load. Higher KV motors spin faster but require more current to produce the same torque as lower KV motors. Motor KV is determined by factors like coil turns and magnet strength. While KV does not directly impact torque, it affects torque constant - higher KV motors need more current to produce the same torque. It is generally more efficient to use a lower KV motor appropriate for the propeller size to avoid overheating issues.

What is KV of brushless motors?

The number of revolutions per minute (rpm) that a motor turns at when it is fed 1V (one volt) in
the absence of any load (such a propeller attached to the motor) is "KV." For example, a 2300KV
motor powered by a 3S LiPo battery (12.6V) will rotate at approximately 28,980 RPM (2300 x
12.6) in the absence of propellers. Motor KV is often specified by the motor manufacturer as a
rough approximation. Example: 2300(kV rating) X 12.6(Voltage) = 28,980(Revolutions Per Minute)

Winding Turns vs. Motor KV

The motor's kv is determined by the coil's number of turns and the stator's strength of magnetic
field. Motor KV is frequently enhanced with fewer turns and decreased with more winding turns.
The magnetic strength of the magnets can also affect the motor KV value; stronger magnets have
a higher motor KV.

Windings with Multiple Strands vs Single Stranded

The two primary types of motor windings that are available are single-stranded and multi-
stranded. Instead of using a single, larger wire, multi-stranded windings employ numerous
smaller wires. Each has a distinct set of advantages and restrictions that allow them to be used
for different purposes. Motor kv value can be increased by multi-stranded windings and
decreased by single-stranded windings.

Torque Constant versus Motor KV

Motor KV does not directly change torque, however it does affect the torque constant. The
torque constant of a brushless motor for drone indicates the amount of current required to
produce a certain amount of torque. Motor KV has no effect on the actual torque generated;
instead, coil resistance, air gap, and magnet strength all have much bigger effects.

Higher KV motors have a larger torque constant than lower KV of brushless motors for drones, so
in order to produce the same amount of torque, more current is needed. To provide the same
amount of torque, the higher KV motor requires more current, which results in additional losses
in the wires, ESC, and battery. In addition, the higher current causes the motor to heat up and
produce less magnetic flux. Generally speaking, the higher KV motor would be less efficient if you
were to fly at the same speed as the lower KV engine.

Thus, it makes sense to try to maintain KV at a tolerable level as opposed to an exorbitant one.
This is especially important when building a long-range rig where flight duration and efficiency
are the top priorities.

How can I select the motor's kv for a propeller of a different size?

Larger props are typically utilized with low KV motors, while smaller, lighter props work well with
high KV motors. The motor's mounted propeller creates air resistance, which causes a sudden
drop in RPM. Higher KV motors will provide greater thrust and power in an effort to spin the
propeller more quickly, but they will also need more current.

Combining a larger propeller with a higher KV motor will require more torque to spin the engine
quicker. It will generate excessive heat and take longer to deliver the required torque. This
overheating could also cause damage to your motor.
