This document summarizes a statistical mini-research project on the grades of 50 students from grades 9-11 in mathematics for the 3rd quarter. It finds that 14 students received grades between 81-85. It also finds that if the passing grade was the second position (Q2), 27 students would have failed for the quarter since the passing score was calculated to be 84.8. In conclusion, the performance of the students was not good and teachers should help students improve for the next quarter.

PROBLEM

1. How many students got a grade from 81-85?

2. How many students failed in the 3rd Quarter if the passing score is in the Q₂?
DISCUSSION

A. Data Gathering and Organizing

Dear Respondents,

Greetings!

We are the students of grade 10 Perseverance. Today we are conducting our Statistical Mini

Research entitle “Grades of selected 50 students of Napsan National High School from grade

9, 10, & 11 in math subject (Quarter 3)”.

We are asking for your precious time, and efforts to answer all the questions below.

Name (Optional):
Age:

1. What grade level are you in? (Put a check on the box)
Grade 9 Grade 10
Grade 11

2. What is your grades in Mathematics?

3. Do you find math as a difficult subject? (Put a check on the box)

YES NO
Here is the tabular result of the data gathered about the grades of 50 students in the 3rd quarter in
Mathematics.

Table 1. Frequency Distribution of Grades

Grade 96-100 91-95 86-90 81-85 76-80 71-75
Frequency 4 9 10 14 10 3

B. Data Analysis and Interpretation of Data

1. How many students got a grade from 81-85?

Table 2. Performance of 50 students in the 3rd quarter

Grades Frequency

96-100 4
91-95 9
86-90 10
81-85 14
76-80 10
71-75 3
INTERPRETATION:
Table 2 shows the grades of 50 selected students of Napsan National High School, where

14 of them have a grade from 81-85 for the 3rd quarter in mathematics, and the rest got a different

score.
2. How many students failed in the 3rd quarter, if the passing score is in the Q₂ (Second
Position)?

Table 3. Frequency Distribution of Grades

Grades of Selected Frequency <cf LB
50 students
96−100 4 50 95.5
91-95 9 46 90.5
86-90 10 37 85.5
81-85 14 27 80.5
76-80 10 13 75.5
71-75 3 3 70.5
i =5 N=50

Table 4. Passing grade is in Q₂ (Second Position)

N Fₚ LB <cfₚ i KN KN
4
Q₂ = LB + [ 4
−¿ cf
f ]
50 14 80.5 13 5 25 84.8

INTERPRETATION:
Table 4 shows that 50% of the students got a passing score of less that or equal to 84.8. It

means that, if the passing grade is in Q₂, then there are 27 students failed the 3rd quarter,

consequently, there are 23 students who passed the 3rd quarter if the passing grade is in Q₂ or

second position.
CONCLUSION

Based on the analysis, it can be said that the performance of the 50 selected students was not

good, because there are 27 students who failed in the 3rd quarter and there are 23 students who

passed the 3rd quarter if the passing score is in Q₂. That is why the 50 selected students must

understand their lessons so that they can get high grades in the incoming 4th quarter, and math

teachers should monitor students to see if they are listening. Also, all the students must focus on

their subjects and participate in every activity.

INTRODUCTION

The dictionary defines Mathematics as the “Science and study of quality, structure and

change”. Mathematicians seek out patterns, formulative new conjunctures, and establish truth by

rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and definition.

Statistical Research is the rigorous development of improve or new statistical methods

grounded in probability and statistical theory. Statistical Research means research which applies

statistical methodologies involving the use of questionnaire information.

Grades are very essential. It illustrates the measurement of students understanding on the

lessons. Teachers use grade primarily for administrative purposes, to give students feedback

about their progress and achievement, it also use to evaluate on students work. In this way,

instructors communicate to students on how they are performing in the class and where they

need more help to achieve their goals.

All of us have intelligent. God created us equally but sometimes we don’t know on our self

that we are smart so that we fail sometimes. However, we must trust our self, we must have

enough confidence on ourselves that we are smart, that we can achieve our dreams: even though

we are not smart like others.
