What is Nervous System ?
The nervous system is a network of neurons
whose main feature is to generate, modulate
and transmit information between all the
different parts of the human body.
The nervous system structures preside over
everything that makes us human; our
consciousness, cognition, behaviour and
memories.

Neuron
Neurons are the basic units of the nervous system,
responsible for transmitting information throughout
the body via electrochemical impulses. A typical
neuron has three main parts:
Soma
Dendrite
Axon

Glial cells
Glial cells support and protect neurons. They
come in various types, including:
Astrocytes
Oligodendrocytes
Schwann cells
Microglia cell
Ependymal cells

Central Nervous System - CNS
Central Nervous System (CNS): Consists of
the brain and spinal cord.
The central nervous system is responsible for
processing and analyzing information from the
senses, controlling body activities, and
generating reflexes."

Brain
Functions:
Control conscious activities
Coordinate automatic activities
Regulate emotional responses
Coordinate movement
Parts of the brain:
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Brainstem
10/ 17
Spinal cord
Functions:
Transmit nerve signals
Control reflexes
Structure:
The spinal cord is protected by the spine and
runs along the back, from the base of the skull
to the lower back.
It consists of spinal segments, each connecting
to peripheral nerves that control different
parts of the body.

Peripheral Nervous System - PNS
The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) includes all
the nerves and neurons outside the brain and
spinal cord.
The PNS connects the Central Nervous System
(CNS) with the organs, muscles, and skin of the
body.
The Peripheral Nervous System is divided into:
+ The Somatic Nervous System
+ The Autonomic Nervous System

Autonomic Nervous System
Function: Regulates the involuntary activities of the
body such as heart rate, digestion, respiration, and
blood pressure.
Components:
Sympathetic Nervous System: Activates the "fight
or flight" response, increasing heart rate, dilating
airways, and inhibiting digestion.
Parasympathetic Nervous System: Activates the
"rest and digest" response, decreasing heart rate,
constricting airways, and stimulating digestion.
