Science unit 11 & 12

Vocabulary

Vibration a backwards and forwards movement

Loudness How loud or soft a sound is

Pitch how high or low a sound is

Amplitude the maximum movement of a vibration from its central

position

Frequency the number of vibrations each second of a sound wave

Hertz the unit of frequency; symbol Hz; one hertz equals one vibration
per second

Vacuum a region which contains no matter

Sound wave a vibration in the air or other material; how sound travels

Oscilloscope a device which converts varying electrical signals into a trace

on a screen

Eardrum a membrane at the end of the canal witch vibrates when a sound
wave enters the ear

Cochlea the organ in the ear which converts sound vibrations into
electrical signals to the brain

Ultrasound sound whose frequency is too high for us to hear

Noise unwanted sounds

Light source an object which produces light

Luminous describes an object which is a source of its own light

Non-luminous describes an object which is not a source of its own light

Transmitted to let light through

Transparent describes a material through which light can pass

Opaque describes a material which does not transmit light

Reflected the bouncing back of a ray of light when it strikes the surface
of a non-transparent material

Shadow an area or a space where the light from a source does not
reach

Image an object's reflection in a mirror

Incident ray a ray of light which strikes a surface

Reflected ray a ray of light which has been reflected by a mirror or other
surface

Normal a line drawn at right angles (90°) to a surface at the point

where a ray of light strikes it

Refraction the bending of a ray of light as it travels from one transparent

material into another

Spectrum the different colors which make up white light, spread out
in order

Dispersion the spreading out of the different colors of white light to form
a spectrum

Primary colors the three colors of light (red, green, blue) which can be mixed
to produce any other color

Light ray a line drawn to show the path followed by light

Light gate a device used to measure the time taken by an object moving
between two points

Periscope Tubes with mirrors arranged to allow the user to see objects
that are hidden from view
1Hz = 1 Hartz + 1 vibration per second

Calculating Frequency

Time of vibration / time

Range of hearing

Young people (under 20)  can hear up to 20,000Hz

Older people (over 50)  can hear up to 15,000Hz

Sound above 20,000Hz are beyond to human hearing, such sounds are
known as

Ultrasound
++

Bets use ultrasound to find their way around. ( Emit high-pitched

squeaks and listen to the reflated waves.)

Color of the spectrum

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet

Primary color

Red, Green, Blue

Red + Green + Blue + White
