About the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs


The Department of Home Affairs (HA) is responsible for leading centrally co-ordinated strategy, policy
and capabilities in relation to national security, law enforcement, immigration and customs,
emergency management, countering terrorism, cyber security, countering foreign interference,
critical infrastructure protection, multi-cultural affairs, social cohesion, countering violent extremism,
and transport security. Home Affairs contributes to achieving three principal government outcomes
of strong national security, a strong economy and a prosperous and cohesive society.
The Department of Home Affairs at the Australian High Commission New Delhi is Australia’s largest
overseas visa processing office. This team is responsible for delivering a wide range of temporary
and permanent visas, in addition to limited types of citizenship services, across India, Nepal, Bhutan
and Bangladesh.
About the Position
Visa Officer Bs within Immigration Visa Services assess visa and/ or citizenship applications, undertake
verification checks and/ or assist with investigations. They usually work under the direction of a Team
Leader. Visa Officer Bs know and uphold Home Affairs values, the LES Code of Conduct and other
relevant professional codes of ethics and practice WHS requirements.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
 Under general direction, apply an understanding of relevant legislation, policies and
procedures to make lawful, fair and reasonable visa decisions. Identify and refer
complex/sensitive cases to a more senior level.
 Prepare and file accurate reports, case-notes, interview notes, correspondence and other
material in relation to visa matters.
 Manage referrals for integrity checks, prioritise cases for interview and assessment, carry out
integrity interviews and undertake routine investigations.
 Respond to client queries by phone, email and in person.
 Provide translation and interpretation of community languages as required.
 Travel and represent the Immigration Section to clients, agents and other stakeholders as
required.

Qualifications/Experience
 Sound knowledge of written and spoken English.
 Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of applications.
 Written and spoken skills in a regional language (e.g. Nepali, Bengali, Tamil, Hindi, Gujarati,
etc.) are desired.
 Graduate level qualifications are desired.
Personal Qualities
 Must have the capacity to quickly become proficient in High Commission and Home Affairs
systems, programs and policies.
 Must have good organisational abilities and successful workload management practices in
order to deliver in a high-pressured environment of tight deadlines and competing priorities,
while also maintaining high levels of client service and professional integrity.
 Must possess ability to work with some autonomy, and have well-developed levels of
judgement and initiative, in addition to an ability to provide quality advice to senior managers.
 Must have sound Information Technology skills, good interpersonal skills and a strong
commitment to Home Affairs client service principles and standards in order to support the
day-to-day operations of Home Affairs.
