Draft Feb 12 2020 Implementation Plan Draft Eric Lee
Mar 20 2020 Pilot Run @ aTWN001 Eric + Saji Sabu
1.0 2020
** Replacing DIMM has no impact to dual SDP sites
** Replacing DIMM has impact to a single SDP sites

n Parts to order – Each Router

MEM-4300-8G=, 8G memory upgrade for ISR4331
for ISR4331 Qty 2 (8G DRAM (1 DIMM) 1600 for Cisco 4300 series ISR)

16G flash memory upgrade for ISR4331

MEM-FLSH-16G=,
Qty 1 (16G eUSB Flash Memory for Cisco ISR 4430, 4350 &
for ISR 4331
4330 Spare)
*FLSH is NOT a typo; Already requested ITAM to add above items to EMR form.

n Implementation Options
o Option A: Similar to Router Refresh (safe approach)
Skinny Config/Full Config/X509 – takes longer time

o Option B: Hot Swapping with USB stick (this document)

Medium to hig risk – rollback will not be straight forward work (cisco bug).

o Option C (ad-hoc option): Hot Swapping with tftp

For customer sites not allowing USB stick for work

n SOW Summary (each _R2 and _R1):

* TAP/CNETS – to assure FE has skinny config (provided by TAP) with him when on-site.

aTWN006R2M# delete usb0: startup-config.cfg (license-saved.lic, running-config.cfg)
aTWN006R2M# dir usb0: to make sure above saved files have been deleted
*Notes 1*
Replacing DIMM Ram & Flash should not impact startup-config stored in the nvram.
Due to a Cisco bug (CSCvg33382 - C9300), the router will “failed to initialize nvram” when it boots after RAM/Flash upgrade.
The strtup-config will NOT to be read/use.
n Upgrading _R2. <Orange Texts: OBS FE, Blue Texts: CNETS>

Step 0 : On site FE to inform OCC about to replace DIMM RAM & Flash
Step 1 : Inser USB stick to _R2’s USB Port

a) Mastercard CNETS team: save the IOS file.

aTWN006R2M# copy bootflash: isr4300-universalk9.16.06.05.SPA.bin usb0: isr4300-

universalk9.16.06.05.SPA.bin
** Skip this step if IOS file is already there**

b) Mastercard CNETS team: save the Configuration files

aTWN006R2M # copy running-config usb0:running-config.cfg

aTWN006R2M # copy startup-config usb0:startup-config.cfg

c) Mastercard CNETS team: save the License

aTWN006R2M # License save usb0:license-saved.lic

d) Mastercard CNETS team: make sure the files are saved.

aTWN006R2M # dir usb0:

Step 2: To replace existing DIMM and Flash
(OBS FE to do the physical works)
a) Step 3-1: Disconnect the power supply.
b) Step 3-2: Remove the chassis cover. (6 Screws including 2 screws on both sides)

c) Step 3-3: Locate the DIMM module.

See figure 5-6 to find DIMM connectors on the router
1 Power Supply 2 Flash memory card connector
3 SSD mSATA connector 4 DIMMs
5 CPU ISC /PVDM-4 slot 6 ISC /PVDM-4 slot
7 SM-X Slot1 8 NIM Slot 2
9 NIM Removable Divider 10 NIM Slot 1
11 SFP/RJ45Ports

DIMMs have a polarization notch on the mating edge to prevent incorrect insertion. Figure 5-
21 shows the polarization notch on a DIMM.
Figure 5-21 DIMM Showing Polarization Notch

1 Polarization notch

d) Step 3-4 Pull the latches away from the DIMM at both ends to lift the DIMM slightly. Pull the
DIMM out of the socket as shown in Figure 5-22
Remove existing (4G) DIMM – to remove existing 4G DIMM from DIMN sockets, 2G DIMN
on each socket 1 and socket 2.

Figure 5-22 Remove a DIMM

e) Step 3-5 Orient the DIMM so that the polarization notch lines up with the polarization key on
the connector. See 1.

f) Step 3-6 Insert the DIMM into the connector one side at a time. Figure 5-24 shows what to
avoid while handling a DIMM.
Install DIMM - – to install new 16G DIMM from DIMN sockets, 8G DIMN on each
socket 1 and 8G DIMN socket 2.

g) Step 3-7 Firmly press the DIMM into the connector until the latches close onto the DIMM.
Ensure that both latches rotate to the closed position against the DIMM. See Figure 5-25.
Figure 5-25 Install a DIMM
h) Step 3-8 Remove the Flash Memory Card
1. (Rare cae) Models with *build-in 8G Flash - go to next step c) step 3-9.
*(you don’t see a flash card on the flash slot shown below)

Default 4G flash is build-in imbedded on

the motherboard.
When the new 16GB flash card is
installed, the on-board flash will be
disabled automatically.

(thanks Jumpei for the photo and info.)

2. Models without build-in 8G Flash.

*(you can see a flash card on the flash slot shown above)
Unscrew (2 screws). the flash memory card, see below 2 pictures and Figure 5-54

i) Step 3-9 Place the flash memory card on top of the flash memory card connector.
j) Step 3-10 Tighten the supplied screw to secure the flash memory card in place.

Screw comes with 16G Flash

k) Replace the chassis cover and Power on the router

Step 4: Boot up the router

OBS FE -–
a) Boot up the router from the Cisco image that is available in an external USB stick
rommon 1 > b usb0: isr4300-universalk9.16.06.05.SPA.bin

deleted from the USB before releasing FE from customer site.
