Life Process

The document contains a series of questions related to life processes, focusing on nutrition, respiration, transportation, and excretion in living organisms. It includes experimental designs, diagrams, and explanations of various biological functions and systems, such as photosynthesis, digestive processes, respiratory mechanisms, and the human excretory system. The questions aim to assess understanding of these concepts and their interconnections in maintaining life.

LIFE PROCESSES

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

Nutrition
1. Design an experiment to demonstrate that CO 2 is essential for photosynthesis. Write
the observation and conclusion of the experiment.
2. Draw the diagram of an open stomatal pore and label (I) Guard cells and (II)
Chloroplast on it. Mention two functions performed by stomata.
3. What happens to food in our buccal cavity?
4. Give reasons: Numerous villi are present in the inner lining of small intestine.
5. Name three different glands associated with the digestive system in humans. Also
name their secretion and function.
6. Bile juice does not have any digestive enzyme but still plays a significant role in the
process of digestion. Justify the statement.
7. Draw a diagram of human alimentary canal and label the following parts:
(i) Largest gland.
(ii) gland that secretes digestive enzymes and hormone.
(iii) part where HCL is produced.
(iv) part where digested food is absorbed.
(v) part which stores bile until it’s needed for digestion.
8. The maintenance function of all living organisms must go on even when they are
not doing anything particular. Even when we are just sitting in a class or even
asleep, this maintenance job has to go on. These maintenance processes require
energy to prevent damage and break-down of cells and tissue, which is obtained by
the individual organism from the food prepared by the autotrophs, called producers.
(a) Name and define the process by which green plants prepare food.
(b) Write chemical equation involved in the above process.
(c) (i) State in proper sequence the events that occur in synthesis of food by desert
plants.
(ii) Explain giving reasons what happens to the rate at which the green plants
will prepare food
(I) during cloudy weather, and
(II) when stomata get blocked due to dust.

Respiration
9. Sometimes while running, the athletes suffer from muscle cramps. Why? How is the
respiration in this case different from aerobic respiration?
10.(a) Write the reaction that occurs when glucose breaks down anaerobically in yeast.
(b) Write the mechanism by which fishes breathe in water.
(c) Name the respiratory pigment and write its role in human beings.
11.Give reason. i) the lungs always contain a residual volume of air. ii) the trachea
doesn’t collapse when we exhale.
12.What are the features required in a respiratory surface?
13.Draw a diagram of human respiratory system and label the following: (i) part where
air is filtered by fine hair and mucus (ii) part which terminates in balloon – like
structures (iii) balloon – like structures where exchange of gases takes place. (iv)
part which separates chest cavity from abdominal cavity.
Transportation
14. Draw a labelled section of human heart and write the type of blood flows in all four
chambers and the blood vessels.
15.Write two water conducting tissues present in plants? How does water continuously
enter into the root system?
16.“Lymph is another type of fluid involved in transportation”. Write its other name.
Justify the statement by explaining the process.
17.Ventricles have thicker muscular walls than atria. Give reason.
18. (a) Write the correct sequence of steps followed during journey of oxygen rich
blood
from lungs to various organs of human body.
(b) What happens when the system of blood vessels develop a leak?
19.Write three types of blood vessels. Give one important feature of each and their
differences.
20.Besides minimising the loss of blood, why is it essential to plug any leak in a blood
vessel? Name the component of blood which helps in this process and state how this
component perform this function.
21. (i) The transport system in plants is relatively slower than in animals. Give reasons.
(ii) State the role of phloem in the transport of materials in plants.
22.Observe the given diagram and answer the question that follows:

i. Identify A. How does its structure help in its function?

ii. How does B help in the formation of lymph?
iii. What is the advantage of this type of circulation?
23.(a) What is translocation? Why is it essential for plants?
(b) Where do the substances in plants reach as a result of translocation?
24.(a) Write the components of blood.
(b) Trace the movement of oxygenated blood in the body.
(c) Write the function of valves present in between atria and ventricles and septa
between the right and left side of the heart.

Excretion
24. (a) Draw a diagram of human excretory system and label the following parts on it:
(i) Right Renal Artery (ii) Vena cava (iii) Urinary bladder (iv) Left kidney
(b) List two vital functions of kidney.
25. Observe the given diagram and answer the question that follows

a. Identify A. What is its function?

b. Why is the above structure coiled?
c. What is the composition of the fluid present in B?

25.Name the substances other than water that are reabsorbed during urine formation.
What are the two parameters that decide the amount of water that is reabsorbed in
the kidney?
(i) What is the basic filtration unit of the kidney called?
(ii) State the purpose of formation of urine.
(ii) What will happen if there is no tubular reabsorption in the nephrons of kidney?
