Introduction

A Gantt chart ( Clark, 1922) is a type of bar chart that represents a project schedule. It

visually displays the start and end dates of various elements of a project, making it a popular

tool for project management. Each task is represented by a horizontal bar, with the length of

the bar corresponding to the task's duration. Gantt charts are used to track project timelines,

dependencies between tasks, and overall progress.

Key features of Gantt charts:

1. Tasks and Phases: Each task in a project is listed vertically on the left, with

corresponding timeframes displayed horizontally.

2. Timeline: The timeline at the top shows units of time (days, weeks, or months).

3. Dependencies: They illustrate relationships between tasks (e.g., Task A must be

completed before Task B begins).

4. Progress Tracking: As tasks are completed, they are visually updated, allowing teams

to monitor progress easily.

In this written assignment, I look at creating a colour coded Gantt Chart for creating a timeline

of the tasks to be completed in a certain time frame. This Chart will have all the characteristics

of a professional tool required for keeping track of the sub tasks to be completed in a certain

time frame. For example, in the Portfolio Creation Task, there are a lot of sub tasks to be

completed which are basically the artefacts with individual resources and their associated tags

to be created in certain localized time frames within the time frame allocated for the overall

time frame. The colour coding for the Portfolio Creation is simple and easy to follow : Yellow

indicates a task that has not been started and indicates 0 % progress while green indicates 100

% progress. Blue is indicative of 50 % progress. The goal would be to adhere to timelines as

2
much as possible as indicated in the Gannt Chart. These reasons would be attributed for, in a

separate text box which would include any challenges or issues in the completion of the same.

For the most part, these timelines are rigid and every effort would be made to be adhered to

these. The colour changes would be made as soon as task completion has been effected.

Representative Snapshots of the Tool – Task 1

As indicated in the snapshot above, a solid outline for the ellipsoid boxes indicative of

completion progress is given for Portfolio Completion.

For every project, a notes slide is included which will document any issues, challenges, and

reminders which would aid in quick resolution of issues and completion of the project.

Representative Snapshots of the Tool – Task 2

As indicated in the snapshot above, a solid broken line for the ellipsoid boxes is given for

Research and Practice portfolio for easy visual differentiation.

Finally for the Applied Research Proposal , a dotted border line envelops the ellipsoid boxes

indicative of project completion along with a slide for Notes that documents the challenges

and issues towards final project submission.

Summary

All of the three projects will be documented and tracked using the Canva Tool (Canva, 2024),

the link for which is provided above. It is a convenient tool that is visually striking and yet

simplistic in design and elegance. As is the requirement, sub tasks are demarcated wherever

applicable and the relevant start and end dates are also indicated.
