Chapter 2
Working of a Computer
Learning Objectives
After completing chapter, students will be able to:
Let’s Connect
Write I for Input devices and O for Output.
Students! You know computer follows instructions to do work. But have you
thought how computer work on the data and instructions?
Input
The data, Instructions and commands given to the computer are called
Inputs.

Process
A computer accepts, examines and calculates the result. This is called
processing.
For example,
The input Instruction will be processed on the input data.

Activity
You will notice that a computer follows the instructions of its user. We give
input, a computer processes it and give the desired output.
Summary
A computer follows three basic steps to work–Input-Process-Output (IPO).
Input refers to the data that we enter into the computer.
Processing is done on the input data.
The processed information is called output.
Inputs are entered into the computer through input devices, like keyboard,
mouse, etc.
6
The CPU is a processing device that acts on the data to convert it in useful
information.
The output is shown by the output devices, like monitor and printer.
Test Yourself
A. Multiple choice questions.
1. An Instruction given to the computer is called:

Fun in Exploring
Arrange the following activities in the IPO order by writing I for Input, P for
Process, and O for output.
1. Ironing clothes
9
Explain the IPO cycle by using pictures.
Take printout of your document by clicking the File tab Print.
A dialog box appears, select printer name and paper range (All) and click
Print button.
Teacher’s Notes
10
Explain the concept of IPO by using some daily life examples.
