CS Assignment 7

The document outlines the design of a regulated power supply that outputs 5 volts DC, detailing the components such as a step-down transformer, rectifier, filter, and the LM7805 voltage regulator IC. It explains the function of each component, including how the transformer steps down voltage and the role of the rectifier and filter in producing a stable DC output. The conclusion emphasizes the effectiveness of the design in maintaining a constant output despite input voltage fluctuations.

Assignment 7
Design of regulated power supply to give a output of 5 volt DC. Design suitable step down
transformer, rectifier, filter and regulator IC.

Voltage regulator:-
Voltage sources in a circuit may have fluctuations resulting in not giving fixed voltage outputs.
Voltage regulator IC maintains the output voltage at a constant value. 7805 IC, a voltage
regulator integrated circuit (IC) is a member of 78xx series of fixed linear voltage regulator ICs
used to maintain such fluctuations. The xx in 78xx indicates the fixed output voltage it provides.

Description:
The transformer is used to step down the AC mains voltage (230V, 50 Hz) to desired voltage
level by controlling the turns ratio N2:N1. The secondary voltage, Vs is 230(N2/N1). The

transformer also provides electrical isolation to the electronic system from AC mains. The
rectifier converts the AC voltage to pulsating DC, which is smoothened by filter circuit. The
output voltage of the power supply is expected remain constant against variations in the load
current or variations in input voltage. This is accomplished by using a suitable voltage regulator.

For transformer,
Ns/Np= Vs/Vp

Ns , Np are secondary and primary turns respectively

Vs , Vp are secondary and primary voltages respectively

We have used Ns/Np = 20: 1

Hence, Vp = Vs*(Np/Ns)

Vs = 230 Vrms i.e. Vs = 230*√2 = 325.269 Vp

therefore, Vp = 325.269/20 i.e. Vp = 16.26 Volt

Output of transformer:-

For Bridge rectifier,

Each diode has a voltage drop of 0.7 volt.

Hence voltage drop across two diodes will be 1.4 volts.

Therefore output of bridge rectifier is ( 16.26 - 1.4 ) = 14.86 volts

For Filter,
A capacitor is used to filter out the ripples and get a DC output. When a capacitor of smaller
value such as 1uF is used we get ripples in the output. Whereas for larger values of capacitor
such as 5mF, the ripples are removed and we get a constant DC output.

Output of Filter:-

Final Output:-
LM7805 voltage regulator IC gives a constant DC output of 5 Volt.

Conclusion:-
Regulated power supply is designed to give an output of 5 volt DC irrespective of fluctuations in
the input voltage. Regulated power supply is designed using step down transformer, rectifier,
filter and regulator IC LM7805.
