COMMON LABORATORY APPARATUS, DESCRIPTION AND USE/FUNCTION:


1. Name- Beaker
Description-A beaker is a cylindrical glass or plastic vessel used for holding liquids.
It is a multi- purpose piece of equipment used for containing a chemical reaction,
measuring liquids, heating them over a Bunsen burner's flame or collecting
them in a
titration experiment.
Function-A common use for polypropylene beakers is gamma spectral analysis of
liquid and solid samples.

2. Name-Erlenmeyer flask
Description-An Erlenmeyer flask, also known as a conical flask (British English) or a
titration flask, is a type of laboratory flask which features a flat bottom.
Function-holding, mixing, measuring, heating, and boiling chemicals, chemical
reactions, and phase changes.

3. Name-Florence flask
Description-A Florence flask (also known as a boiling flask) is a type of flask used
as
an item of laboratory glassware. It can be used as a container to hold solutions of
chemicals. A Florence flask has a round body with a single long neck and with either
a
round or a flat bottom.
Function- mixing, measuring & heating chemicals, samples and solutions.

4. Name-Graduated cylinders
Description-Graduated cylinders are long, slender vessels used for measuring the
volumes of liquids. They are not intended for mixing, stirring, heating, or weighing.
Graduated cylinders commonly range in size from 5 mL to 500 mL.
Function- measuring volumes (amounts) of liquids.

5. Name-Watch glass
Description-A watch glass is a circular concave piece of glass used in chemistry as
a surface to evaporate a liquid, to hold solids while being weighed, for heating a
small
amount of substance, and as a cover for a beaker.
Function-to dry and weigh solid compounds and to cover containers such as TLC
developing chambers.

6. Name-funnel
Description-A funnel is a pipe with a wide, often conical mouth and a narrow stem. It
is used to channel liquid or fine-grained substances into containers with a small
opening. Without a funnel, much spillage would occur. Funnels are usually made of
stainless steel, glass, or plastic.

7. Name-Stirring rod
Description-A stirring rod is used for mixing liquids, or solids and liquids. Stir rods
are used as part of proper laboratory technique when decanting supernatants
because
the contact helps to negate the adhesion between the side of the glassware and the
supernatant that is responsible for the liquid running down the side.
Function-mix chemicals and liquids for laboratory purposes.

8. Name-Test tube
Description-A test tube is defined as a small, long plastic cylinder with one open end
used to store, mix, or hold liquids, bodily fluids, bacteria, or chemicals. Test tube
definition is a laboratory tool with various functions in the biological and chemical
sciences.
Function-hold, mix, or heat small quantities of solid or liquid chemicals, especially for
qualitative experiments and assays.

9. Name- Test tube holder


Description-A test tube holder is used to hold test tubes. It is used for holding a test
tube in place when the tube is hot or should not be touched. For example, a test tube
a holder can be used to hold a test tube while it is being heated.

10. Name-Test tube brush


Description-A test tube brush or spout brush is a brush used for cleaning test tubes
and narrow mouth laboratory glassware, such as graduated cylinders, burettes, and
Erlenmeyer flasks.
Function-for cleaning test tubes and other lab ware including tubing.

11. Name- test tube rack


Description-A test tube rack is a piece of laboratory equipment used to hold
multiple test tubes upright at the same time. They are especially useful for organizing
test tubes when different solutions are being worked on or collected at once.
Function- hold multiple test tubes upright at the same time.

12. Name-Evaporating dish


Description-Evaporating dishes are pieces of heat-tolerant laboratory glassware
that are used to hold substances or liquids that are being melted or evaporated. They
are typically made of borosilicate glass (as in Pyrex evaporating dishes) or porcelain
(also called “china dishes”).
Function-used for the evaporation of liquids and solutions to produce a solid
substance or concentrated solutions.

13. Name-Crucible and cover


Description-Crucible covers are designed to fit snugly on top of the crucible,
helping to contain the substance and reduce the risk of spillage or evaporation. They
also help to protect the contents of the crucible from contamination and can be used
to
regulate the flow of air into the crucible during heating.
Function- crucibles enable chemical compounds to be heated to very high
Temperatures.

14. Name- Mortar


Description-A mortar is a vessel in which substances are ground or crushed with a
pestle. A pestle is a tool used to crush, mash or grind materials in a mortar. In solid
state chemistry a mortar and pestle is often used to prepare reactants for a solid
state
synthesis (the ceramic method).
Function- grind substances into a powder or paste.

16. Name-Clay triangle


Description-Clay triangle (pipeclay triangle) is a piece of laboratory equipment used
to support a porcelain crucible being heated by a Bunsen burner (or Brass Blast
Burner, glass alcohol burner). It is used in conjunction with other lab equipment to
create a stable framework to heat in high temperatures.
Function-to support a crucible while it is heated over a Bunsen burner.

17. Name-tripod
Description-A laboratory tripod is a three-legged platform used to support flasks
and beakers. Tripods are usually made of stainless steel or aluminum and made
light-weight for efficient portability within the lab.
Function-to provide a stable and secure platform for holding various laboratory
equipment such as beakers, flasks, and test tubes during experiments.

18. Name-Wire gauze


Description-Wire gauze is a sheet of thin metal that has net-like patterns or a wire
mesh with a ceramic center. The gauze is placed on the tripod stand between the
Bunsen burner and the glassware to support the beakers, flasks, or other glassware
during heating.
Function-to protect it during heating.

19. Name-Bunsen burner


Description-A Bunsen burner is a laboratory instrument that can be used to provide
a single, continuous flame by mixing gas with air in a controlled fashion. The ratio of
gas to air that is mixed together can be manually adjusted, allowing the user to
control the intensity, temperature, and size of the flame.
Function-It is used to heat substances, to combust substances, and to sterilize
objects on high heat.

20. Name-Iron ring


Description-An iron ring or ring clamp is an item of laboratory equipment which
comprises a conjoined metal ring and radially-extending rod. In some cases, the rod
terminates in a screw clamp for attachment to a retort stand or other support; in
Others, the rod may be attached to a stand by means of a laboratory clamp holder.
Function- used to hold separatory funnels

21. Name-Iron stand


Description-An iron stand is a scientific equipment used in chemistry to hold other
kinds of equipment and glassware, such as burettes, test tubes, and flasks. A
conventional retort stand is constructed out of a sturdy base and a vertical rod, both
of
which are generally composed of metal.

Description-Extension Clamps allow placement of apparatus at various distances

Description-In laboratories, spatulas and micro spatulas are small stainless steel
utensils, used for scraping, transferring, or applying powders and paste-like

solvents, which make them ideal for use with a wide range of compounds.
Function- help with mixing, scraping, and other tasks related to transferring
materials and samples from one place to another.

25. Name-Pinch cock


Description-Pinchcocks are laboratory apparatus needed to control the flow of
solutions and effectively clamp off hoses. Lab Pro's pinchcock tubing clamps
are
made of zinc-plated steel wire, so you can rely on them to do their job competently.
Function- compressing a flexible pipe, as a rubber tube, in order to regulate or stop

Description-A water bath is a laboratory equipment that is used to incubate
samples at a constant temperature over a long period of time. Water bath is a
preferred heat source for heating flammable chemicals instead of an open flame to
prevent ignition.
Function-to keep water at a constant temperature for incubating samples in a
Laboratory.

28. Name-Water trough


Description- a shallow dish like vessel filled with a liquid, usually water, and used in
collecting gasses by displacement of liquid from a filled jar held with its open end
under
the surface of the liquid.
Function-to collect gasses in the lab.

29. Name-Rubber stopper


Description-A rubber stopper is a small, tapered plug used to seal the openings of
test tubes, flasks and other laboratory glassware. Stoppers made of cork are also
available for this purpose. However, rubber stoppers are preferable for applications
that
require a tighter seal or a greater degree of chemical resistance.
Function- to seal bottles, tubes and many other containers.

30. Name-Crucible tongs


Description-Crucible tongs are scissor-like tools, but instead of having two blades,
these tools are replaced with two pincers or pieces of metals that concave together,
which allow the users to grasp a hot crucibles, flasks, evaporating dishes, or even
small beakers.
Function-to lift a hot crucible from a furnace or for other items which cannot be
handled with bare hands.

31. Name-Pan balance


Description-A top pan balance, also known as a top loading balance, is a balance
with a weighing pan that is attached to the top, as opposed to one enclosed by the
body of the machine. The lack of a draft shield means the weighing area is not
protected from the wind like other high-accuracy precision and analytical balances.
Function-It provides a surface to hold the objects to be measured.

32. Name-Pipette
Description-a device for measuring and transferring small volumes of liquid that
typically consists of a narrow glass tube into which the liquid is drawn by suction and
kept by blocking the upper end.
Function- to measure out or transfer small quantities of liquid, in volumes of
milliliters (mL), microliters (μL).

33. Name-Volumetric flask


Description-A volumetric flask / measuring flask / graduated flask is a kind of
laboratory flask, calibrated to hold an accurate specific volume at a specific
temperature. Volumetric flasks are used for accurate dilutions and preparation of
solutions and any other liquids needed at the laboratory workflow.
Function-A volumetric flask is used to measure very precisely one specific volume
of liquid (100 mL, 250 mL, etc., depending on which flask you use). This flask is
used to accurately prepare a solution of known concentration.
