Plastering: Presented by

Plastering is a process that renders coarse surfaces smooth by applying cement mortar. It involves applying a cement and sand mixture to walls, ceilings or roofs in one or two thin layers. For internal plastering on brick or concrete, the first layer is typically 1 cement to 4 sand applied up to 15mm thick, followed by a finishing layer of similar mixture. External plastering also involves a rough first layer and finishing layer. Proper tools, time scheduling and materials selection are required to achieve a quality plaster finish.

WHAT IS PLASTERING?

Plastering is a process by which coarse surfaces of wall or

ceiling roofs are changed or turned or rendered to provide
smoothness.
Plastering is done with cement and sand mortar. It consists of
different thickness as per requirement of the site.
It is done by applying cement mortar with required ratio.
Wet materials that spread over wall or roof surfaces should not
be more than 30mm.However, there are surfaces that
irregularities are more than 30mm.

I
In this case under coat which is low cost coarse grain material
is used to render the surface followed by finish coat that is thin
layer of fine grain materials.
RATIO OF CEMENT AND SAND FOR
'PLASTERING'
The ratio of cement and sand for plastering is given below.

For RCC walls- 6mm thickness of cement plaster and cement
mortar 1:3 or 1:4.

For RCC slabs- 6mmvto 10mm thickness of cement plaster and
cement mortar in 1:3 or 1:4.

20mm thick cement mortar in 1:3 with two coats is recommended
in case of vertical Damp Proof Course.

6mm thick cement mortar in 1:3 with a coat of white washing is
recommended in case of bearing plaster on the walls under the
slab.
RAW MATERIAL FOR PLASTERING
Raw materials and scaffolding required for plastering are
given below :

Cement, sand and water are the raw materials required for
plastering.

A double or single scaffolding independent of the work
having two sets of vertical supports shall be provided for all
exposed plaster work.
INTERNAL PLASTERING ON SURFACES
OF BRICK AND CONCRETE.

Surface where plastering is to be done will be cleaned.

All the brick walls will be watered before pasting mortar on
walls.

First coat mortar filling (1:4 Cement and Sand) upto 15 mm
will be applied on surfaces where required mortar thickness
exceed 25mm.

Walls and columns will be plastered 1:4 Cement and Sand
to achieve semi rough finished surface.
 Internal plastering on surfaces of concrete columns, beams &
walls which are aligned with surfaces of brick walls will be
plastered and other concrete surfaces will be finished with
cement base easy plaster

 Vertical joint of structural columns / walls & brick walls will

be treated by fixing 200mm width chicken mesh with wire
nails / concrete nails by centering the mesh to the vertical wall
joint.

All the embedded service lines and provisions (Conduits,
Boxes and etc. ) will be completed on brick walls

Joints between walls and beams will be formed up to a
maximum of 20mm and will be sealed using 30 minutes fire
rated flexible filler
EXTERNAL WALL PLASTERING

Alignment and fixing level pegs on external wall surfaces
will be done using the surveying instrument / centre plumb
bobs.

Projections on the wall surfaces will be chipped off and
cleaned after completing the level pegs on walls.

First coat mortar filling (1:4 Cement and Sand) upto 15 mm
will be applied on surfaces where required mortar thickness
exceed 25mm.

External wall plaster will be finished with rough surface.
.

1:10 slope at the external side of the window sill will be
formed while plastering the window reveals.

Cement paste on concrete surfaces will be applied to improve the
bonding of plaster to the concrete surfaces.

Maximum width of 20mm horizontal grooves between walls and
beams will be formed by cutting using grinders with diamond
wheels after plastering the wall surface. This groove will be
filled with approved weather sealant

TIME SCHEDULE FOR CEMENT
PLASTERING
Time schedule for cement plastering is as follows :

Plan the plastering when the surface receiving plaster coat is
sufficiently matured.

Ensure that subsequent building operations do not cause any
damage in plaster work.

Start external plastering from the top most floors and proceed
downwards.

Start internal plastering after the structural work is complete. Do
plastering on ceiling wherever required before platering walls.
TOOLS REQUIRED FOR PLASTER WORK
Tools required for Plaster Work :
1. ‘Soot Gola’ (Thread)
2. Racking tools
3. Wire Brush
4. Laying Trowel
5. Straight Edge
6. Brick Hammer
7. Plumb and Water Level
8. Wooden setting out Square
