This document discusses the challenges teachers face with modular distance learning in the Philippines. It describes modular distance learning as a self-paced learning system using printed or digital modules. Some challenges for teachers include the time-consuming work of preparing modules, difficulties distributing and collecting modules, and problems contacting and evaluating students with limited connectivity. To address these issues, teachers strive to manage their time well, maintain a positive attitude, develop alternative plans if needed, and further their skills through online training.

CHALLENGES OF
TEACHERS IN MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING MODALITY IN THE NEW NORMAL
Julie Ann P. Balicha
Presenter MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING Modular Distance Learning is in the form of individualized instruction that allows learners to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic copy, whichever is applicable in the context of the learner and other learning resources. MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING Students use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic copy, whichever is applicable in the context of the learner, and other learning resources activity sheets, study guides and other study materials. Learners can have access to electronic copies of learning materials on USB storage and printed SLMs. The teacher takes the responsibility of monitoring the progress of the learners by checking their work submitted/dropped off at school every end of the week. The learners may ask assistance from the teacher via e-mail, telephone, text message/instant messaging, etc. during teacher's office hours. REASONS WHY TEACHERS ARE IN FAVOR OF MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING?
• If to consider the engagement capacity of children,
modular distance is more convenient. • It is much accessible for the kind of pupils in the community. • It can cater pupils who cannot afford gadgets and internet connectivity that will be used in online class. • This is the appropriate learning modality in our community. REASONS WHY TEACHERS ARE IN FAVOR OF MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING? • More time to read/study the lesson. • It is more reliable and convenient to pupils who do not have gadgets. • Not every pupil is fortunate like their classmates and most of them only rely on books, that is why modular is more applicable than online learning. • MDL provides greater flexibility for students to work at their own pace and review work as needed. • Incapability to access online learning. ADVANTAGES OF MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING 1. LEARNING CONTINUES WHEN THE LEARNERS ADAPT TO CHANGE -There are more learners who are learning even in this type of academic set-up wherein they are learning at home with the guidance and supervision of their parents in their SLM or their self-learning modules. 2. PARENTS REALIZE THEIR IMPORTANT ROLE IN THEIR CHILDREN’S EDUCATION -Due to the covid-19 crisis going on in the country, parents now realized their role in their children’s learning and education. They are now aware that teaching is not easy. ADVANTAGES OF MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING 3. MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING TEACH THE LEARNERS VALUES AS WELL AS THE LESSONS -They learn how to manage their time because even if they are at home, they have to strictly follow their schedule in answering the LAS or the learner’s answer sheets based on their SLM or the self-learning modules. 4. TEACHERS BECOME OPEN-MINDED WITH THE CHALLENGES BROUGHT BY THE PANDEMIC -There are teachers who look at the pandemic as a challenge of educational growth by means of making the (SLMs) self learning modules, compiling all the necessary lessons , objectives and competencies. CHALLENGES OF TEACHERS IN THE PREPARATION OF MODULES 1. Time Consuming -The lack of enough time in preparing and printing the modules of the students causes the late production of modules. 2. Lack of Printing Materials/Scarcity of Resources -The lack of printing materials and scarcity of supplies affect the productivity of teachers in the production of modules. Sometimes, teachers ask for donations from other individuals such as bond papers and inks. 3. Insufficient time and assistance in printing the modules -Teachers prepare the modules only per unit or chapter to be able to produce the modules on time. CHALLENGES OF TEACHERS IN THE DISTRIBUTION OF MODULES To avoid the risks of the COVID-19 pandemic, the schools implemented a system of delivery and retrieval. 1. Late students who claim their modules Students who claim the modules late than the scheduled time that became the reason why some students submit late outputs or even do not submit at all. 2.Inactive contact numbers of learners (Access to students) 3. Difficulty in contacting students’ parents CHALLENGES OF TEACHERS IN MONITORING STUDENT’S LEARNING 1. Unable to contact the learners 2. Students/parents with no contact numbers/internet connection -Since teachers sometimes use social media platforms such as messenger and email to monitor the students learning and for the submission of some activities, some students cannot submit due to lack of internet connectivity and the gadget needed 3. Difficulty in validating students’ performance -The validation of students’ learning is also difficult on the part of the teacher since there are modules being answered by parents and tutors, not the learners. 4. Personal monitoring may cause health-risks CHALLENGES OF TEACHERS IN THE RETRIEVAL OF MODULES 1. Students’ failure to follow the schedule set for the submission of modules It affects the teacher’s schedule in checking the modules as it consumes time in checking all the outputs of the students. 2. Submission of incomplete answers in a particular module Teachers tend to accept these modules but they give instructions to the student to accomplish the lacking activities. But teachers find it hard whenever there are students who do not submit any answered module in a specific quarter CHALLENGES OF TEACHERS IN THE RETRIEVAL OF MODULES 3. Unidentified answer sheets of students As teachers segregate the modules, traceability of students’ answered modules becomes a challenge on their part. Sometimes this becomes the reason why there are modules being given to the wrong adviser or teacher-in-charge 4. Not all students submit the answered modules Poor attendance of students’ submission of module CHALLENGES OF TEACHERS IN CHECKING & EVALUATING STUDENT’S ANSWERS IN THE MODULE 1. Limited time in checking due to other tasks too many loads of paper works affect the teachers’ time and efficiency in checking students’ outputs. 2. Low scores of students 3. Not legible handwriting of a student This affects the teachers’ interpretation and understanding of what students have answered. This may also result in teachers being unable to check the outputs of students since the students’ penmanship is not legible How teachers cope with the challenges they encounter in MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING MODALITY 1. Time Management Through providing a schedule of activities and balancing tasks, teachers are able to deal with tasks in ways that they know which to prioritize. 2. Positivity Being positive lessens the burdens of teachers and it shows the teachers what to focus on and how to deal with things calmly without causing mental stress How teachers cope with the challenges they encounter in MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING MODALITY 3. Alternative Plans This includes certain situations where Sometimes teachers spent from their own pocket when necessary in terms of the reproduction of modules or learning activity sheets and other related learning materials. 4. Attending online webinars and trainings To ease this struggle, teachers equip themselves by attending online webinars and training, reading articles, and even asking help from a colleague
