Integrated Services Digital Network Powerpoint

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a set of protocols that combines digital telephony and data transport services. It provides digital channels including 64 Kbps B channels for user data and a 16 Kbps D channel for signaling. ISDN supports basic rate interface with 2 B channels and 1 D channel, and primary rate interface with 23 B channels and 1 D channel. The ISDN layers include the physical, data link, and network layers to establish and manage calls.

What is ISDN?
 Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)
 It is a set of protocols that combines digital
telephony and data transport services.
 Isolated Subscriber Digital Network
 Integriertes Sprach- und Datennetz
Subscriber Access to the ISDN

Channel Data Rate (Kbps)

Bearer (B) 64
Data (D) 16,64
Hybrid (H) 384,1536,1920
ISDN Channels
 B Channels (Bearer Channel)
 It is the basic user channel and can carry any type of
digital information in full-duplex mode as long as the
required transmission rate does not exceed 64 Kbps.
 D Channels (Data Channel)
 To carry control signaling for the B channels.

 H Channels (Hybrid channel)

 These rates suit H channels for high data-rate
applications such as video, teleconferencing, and so on.
Types of ISDN Access Interface
 Basic Rate Interface (BRI)
 a digital pipe consisting of two B channels and one 16
Kbps D channel
 Primary Rate Interface (PRI)
 The usual primary rate interface (PRI) specifies a digital
pipe with 23 B channels and one 64 Kbps D channel
 Broadband ISDN
 150 Mbps
 for future HDTV projects
 H channels
Functional Grouping
Functional Grouping
 Network Termination 1 (NT1)
 Controls the physical and electrical termination of the
ISDN at the user’s premises and connects the user’s
internal system to the digital subscriber loop.

 Network Termination 2 (NT2)

 NT2s provide multiplexing (layer 1)

 Flow control (layer 2)

 Packetizing (layer 3)
Functional Grouping
 Terminal Equipment 1 (TE1)
 supports the ISDN standards

 digital telephones

 integrated voice/data terminals

 digital facsimiles

 Terminal Equipment 2 (TE2)

 provide backward compatibility with a customer’s
existing equipment
Functional Grouping

 Terminal Adapter (TA)

 Converts information received in non-ISDN format
from a TE2 into a format capable of being carried by
the ISDN

interfaces R, S, T and U

BRI and PRI digital pipes
 Power supply
The ISDN Layers
 Physical Layer Specification for BRI
 R interface

 S interface

 U interface

 BRI Frame

 Connection and Topology

- bus or star topology

The ISDN Layers
 Physical Layer Specifications for PRI
 PRI Frame

The B and D channels are multiplexed

using synchronous TDM to create a PRI frame

Point-to-point
The ISDN Layers
 Data Link Layer
 LAPD Addressing

 SAPI Field (Service Access Point Identifier)

-Identifies the type of upper-layer service

using the frame
 TEI Field (Terminal Equipment Identifier)

-Unique address of the TE. It consists of

seven bits and can therefore identify up to 128
different TEs
The ISDN Layers
 Network Layer
The format of the message in this layer consists of a
small but variable number of fields. These fields are of four
types:

 Protocol discriminator (a single one-byte field).

 Call reference (two-or-three-byte field).

 Message type (a single one-byte field).

 Information elements (a variable number of variable-

length fields).
Call Establishment Messages
 Setup. Sent by the calling user to the network or by the called
user to initiate a call.

 Setup acknowledgement. Sent by the called user to the

network or by the network to the calling user to indicate that
setup has been received.

 Connect. Sent by the called user to the network or by the

network to the calling user to indicate acceptance of the call.
Call Establishment Messages
 Connect acknowledgement. Sent by the network to the called user
to say that the desired connection has been awarded.

 Progress. Sent by the network to the called user to indicate that

call establishment is in progress.

 Alerting. Sent by the called user to the network or by the network

to the calling user to indicate that the call user alert (ringing) has
been initiated.

 Call processing. Sent by the called user to the network or by the

network to the calling user to indicate that the request call
establishment has been initiated.
Call information Messages
 Resume. Sent by the user to the network to request that a
suspended call be resumed.

 Resume acknowledgement. Sent by the network to the user

to acknowledge a request to resume the call.

 Suspend. Sent by a user to request that the network suspend a

call.

 Suspend acknowledgement. Sent by the network to the user

to acknowledge the requested suspension of the call.
Call information Messages
 Suspend reject. Sent by the network to the user to reject the
request suspension.

 User information. Sent by a user to the network to be

delivered to the remote user. This message allows the user to
send information using out-of-band signaling.
Call Clearing Messages
 Disconnect. Sent by the calling user to the network or by the
network to the called user to clear the end-to-end connection
(termination).

 Release. Sent by a user or network to indicate the intension to

disconnect and release the channel.

 Release complete. Sent by a user or network to show that the

channel has been released.
