Week 2 Lesson 10

When parallel lines are intersected by a transversal, several angle relationships are formed: 1. Corresponding angles are equal. 2. Alternate interior angles are equal. 3. Alternate exterior angles are equal. Knowing the measure of one angle allows you to determine the measures of all other angles using these relationships between angles formed by parallel lines cut by a transversal.

LESSON 10 : Identifying and

Applying Relationships among

Angles formed by Parallel Lines
cut by a Transversal

Prepared by : Ms. Joana May C. Alvarez

Review
1. Complete: When a transversal meets two or more parallel lines:
equal
(i) the alternate angles formed are ____________
supplementary
(ii) the co-interior angles formed are ________________
equal
(iii) the corresponding angles formed are ____________
2. In the following diagrams, 𝐴||𝐶. In each case, find the value of 𝑎, giving a
reason or reasons.
i. 𝑎 = 110 (corresponding angles, 𝐴||𝐶)

ii. 𝑎 = 85 (co-interior angles, 𝐴||𝐶)

iii. 𝑎 = 80 ((exterior) alternate angles, 𝐴||𝐶)

Lesson Purpose
Parallel Lines: Two lines that never intersect.
Transversal: A line that intersects two or more lines.

When parallel lines are intersected by a transversal, many angles are formed.
They will form special relationships between pairs
Parallel Lines Cut By A Transversal
Guided Notes
• Reminder: Supplementary angles are two angles that
add up to 180˚. They make a straight line.

1.Name the parallel lines.

2.Name the transversal.

The order the angles are numbered isn’t important, that can
change from problem to problem…
What stays the same is their relationship!
3. Name and highlight the
vertical angles.
• Vertical angles are congruent

1 and 4
2 and 3
5 and 8
6 and 7

*TIP* basically means opposite from

each other, across the vertex,
not adjacent/next to
4. Name and highlight the
corresponding angles.
• Corresponding angles are congruent

1 and 5
2 and 6
3 and 7
4 and 8

*TIP* think which ones ‘match up’ in the same location? like top
left corner with top left corner
5. Name and highlight the
alternate interior angles.
• Alternate Interior angles are congruent

3 and 6
4 and 5

*TIP* think alternate means on opposite sides of the

transversal, and
Interior means inside of the 'track' (parallel lines)
6. Name and highlight the
alternate exterior angles.
• Alternate exterior angles are congruent

1 and 8
2 and 7

*TIP* think alternate means on opposite sides of the

transversal, and
exterior means outside of the 'track‘ (parallel lines)
7. Name and highlight the
same side interior angles.
• Same side interior angles are supplementary

3 and 5
4 and 6

*TIP* think same-side means on the same sides of the

transversal, and
Interior means inside of the 'track' (parallel lines)
8. Name and highlight the
same side exterior angles.
• Same side exterior angles are supplementary

1 and 7
2 and 8

*TIP* think same-side means on the same sides of the

transversal, and
Exterior means outside of the 'track' (parallel lines)
If you know the measure of one of the 8 angles,
you can find the measure of all of the others.
Try it. The measure of 1 = 120°.
1 = 120°
2 = 60°
3 = 60°
4 = 120°
5 = 120°
6 = 60°
*notice all the acute angles in the problem will be 60°
60° and all the obtuse angles in the problem
7 =
will be 120° 8 = 120°
If you know the measure of one of the 8 angles,
you can find the measure of all of the others.
Try it again. The measure of 1 = 72°.
1 = 72°
2 = 108°
3 = 72°
4 = 108°
5 = 108°
6 = 72°
7 = 108°
8 = 72°
Key Words
alternate, co-interior, corresponding, horizontal, oblique, parallel, transversal

• Please note that 𝑎° corresponds to ∠ 𝑃, 𝑏° corresponds to ∠ 𝐴, and 𝑑° corresponds to

∠𝐽
Jemima is designing a tiled logo for a leisure company called ‘E-Zee’ using only straight lines.
All of the lines in the logo:
1. that run from left to right (‘horizontal’ lines) are parallel.
2. that are oblique (‘sloping’ lines) are parallel.
In order to align the parts of the logo accurately, Jemima must be sure that all of the angles in
the design are
correct. Some of the tiling in the logo will include tiles meeting as in the diagrams below.
