Properties of Parallel Cuts A Transversal

This semi-detailed lesson plan for Mathematics 8 focuses on teaching students about inequalities in triangles and the properties of parallel and perpendicular lines. The lesson includes objectives, subject matter, and activities designed to help students identify and analyze different angle pairs formed by parallel lines cut by a transversal. It also emphasizes the importance of communicating mathematical thinking clearly and accurately through problem-solving.

SEMI DETAILED LESSON PLAN

MATHEMATICS 8
CONTENT STANDARD:
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of inequalities in triangle, and parallel
and perpendicular lines.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
The learner is able to communicate mathematical thinking with coherence and clarity in
formulating, investigating, analyzing, and solving real-life problems involving triangle
inequalities, and parallelism and perpendicularity of lines using appropriate and accurate
representations.
LEARNIING COMPETENCY:
The learner illustrates theorems on triangle inequalities (Triangle Inequality Theorem, Exterior
Angle Inequality Theorem, Hinge Theorem).
(M8GE-IVd-1)
I. Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:
a. Identify the different angle pairs if parallel lines are cut by a transversal;
b. Determine the properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal;
c. Find the measures of angles using the properties of parallel lines cut by a
transversal.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Proving Properties of Parallel Lines cut by a Transversal
Reference: Grade 8 Math Quarter IV Self Learning Module 3
Materials: Powerpoint Presentation, Visual Aids, chalk

III. Procedure:
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Classroom Management
4. Checking of Attendance

B. Motivation
“Give me a Number”
The teacher will ask the student to give a number, the number they give
will be determine of who will answer the corresponding questions.
A. Directions: Arrange the jumbled letters to form a word.
1. Two lines that share a common point.
G N T C I T E N R I E S = INTERSECTING
2. Two coplanar lines that do not intersect.
A L L A P E R L = PARALLEL
3. These are lines that lie on the same plane.
C A P R O A L N = COPLANAR
4. Two lines that intersect and form right angles.
P R E P D E N L I U R A C = PERPENDICULAR
5. Two lines that are not coplanar and do not intersect.
E W S K = SKEW
6. A line that intersects two or more coplanar lines at two or more distinct
points.
R A N T S S V E L A R = TRANSVERSAL
C. Activity

D. Analysis
1. Which roads intersect?
2. Which roads parallel?
E. Abstraction
Different kinds of Lines
Intersecting Lines
Two coplanar lines that have a point in common.

(two intersecting lines meeting at point x)

Concurrent Lines
Three or more coplanar lines that intersect at exactly one point.

(concurrent lines meeting at point O)

Perpendicular Lines
Two lines that intersect and form a right angle.

(XY ⊥AB)

Skew Lines
Are non-coplanar lines that do not intersect and are not parallel.

´ and CD
( AB ´ are skew lines because the lines
´ is not the plane
do not intersect and AB
where CD´ lies.)

Parallel Lines
Are coplanar lines that do not intersect.
Line a ∥ Line b

Transversal Lines
A line intersecting two or more coplanar lines at different points.

Line N is the transversal

because it intersects Line L
and Line M.

Properties of Parallel Lines cut by a Transversal

Corresponding Angles
When two parallel lines are intersected by a transversal, the
corresponding angles have the same relative position.
Alternate Interior Angles
Alternate interior angles are formed on the inside of two parallel
lines which are intersected by a transversal.
Alternate Exterior Angles
When two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, the pairs of angles
formed on either side of the transversal are named as alternate exterior
angles.
Interior Angles on the same side
If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then the interior
angles on the same side of the transversal are supplementary.
Exterior Angles on the same side
If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then the exterior
angles on the same side of the transversal are supplementary.
Supplementary Angle/ Linear Pair
Two (or more) angles whose sum is 180° .
Vertical Angle
Two angles whose sides from opposite rays.

Ex.
Two coplanar lines.
Interior Angles:

∠ 3 , ∠ 4 ,∠ 5∧∠ 6

Exterior Angles:

∠ 1 ,∠ 2, ∠ 7∧∠ 8

Corresponding Angles:
∠ 1∧∠5 ∠ 2∧∠ 6
∠ 3∧∠ 7 ∠ 4∧∠ 8
Alternate Interior Angles: Alternate Exterior Angles:
∠ 3∧∠ 6 ∠ 1∧∠ 8
∠ 4∧∠ 5 ∠ 2∧∠7
Interior angles on the same side: Exterior angles on the same side:
∠ 3∧∠ 5 ∠ 1∧∠7
∠ 4∧∠ 6 ∠ 2∧∠ 8
Linear Pairs:
∠ 1∧∠2 ∠ 5∧∠ 6
∠ 2∧∠ 4 ∠ 6∧∠ 8
∠ 4∧∠ 3 ∠ 8∧∠ 7
` ∠ 3∧∠ 1 ∠ 7∧∠ 5
Vertical Angles:
∠ 1∧∠ 4 ∠ 5∧∠ 8
∠ 2∧∠3 ∠ 6∧∠ 7
Ex.
Find the measure of all the other angles:
1. ∠ 1=¿ 80 °
2. ∠ 2=¿ 100 °
3. ∠ 3=80 °
4. ∠ 4=100 °
5. ∠ 5=100°
6. ∠ 6=80 °
7. ∠ 7=80 °
8. ∠ 8=100 °

Corresponding Angles: (are congruent)

∠ 2∧∠5 ∠ 1∧∠6
∠ 3∧∠ 7 ∠ 4∧∠ 8
Alternate Interior Angles: (are congruent) Alternate Exterior Angles: (are congruent)
∠ 3∧∠ 6 ∠ 2∧∠ 8
∠ 4∧∠ 5 ∠ 1∧∠7
Interior Angles on the same side: (supplementary angle)
∠ 3∧∠ 5
∠ 4∧∠ 6
Exterior Angles on the same side: (supplementary angle)
∠ 2∧∠7
∠ 1∧∠ 8
