Thesis Lecture

This document provides an outline for the first chapter of a thesis which introduces the research problem. It includes sections for the conceptual or theoretical framework, research paradigm, statement of the problem, hypothesis or assumptions, importance or significance of the study, scope and delimitation, and definition of terms. For each section, brief descriptions and guidelines are given on what to include. For example, for the conceptual framework section, it describes presenting the name, author, and relevance of theories to be used. For the research paradigm section, it advises illustrating the research process using an input-process-output model.

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction
Conceptual or Theoretical Framework
Research Paradigm
Statement of the Problem
Hypothesis or Assumptions
Importance or Significance of the Study
Scope and Delimitation
Definition of Terms
Introduction

- Introduce your problem using the deductive model

- Cite authorities that would support your views and ideas about
the problem so as to convince your reader that the study is
necessary and relevant.
- Cite as many but limit it to the more recent ones (not older than
5 years in sources).

- Towards the end, give a clear description of the venue of the

study, the description of the would-be respondents etc.
Conceptual/Theoretical Framework

- A Framework is a guide and foundation of a study. This shall serve as your

guide in your research activity.

- The Theoretical framework provides a general representation or idea of

relationships between things in a given phenomenon.

- The Conceptual framework is an abstract and usually part of a theory. It is also

describe the relationship between specific variables in the study. It also outlines
the input and output of the whole investigation
Process:
- Present the name or title, author, characteristics and idea of the
theory/concepts
- Discuss the variables included
- Present the relevance to your study
Research Paradigm
- Illustrates the process of your undertaking using a model. This will show the
activities that you undertake and the process that you will follow.

- The Input Process Output (IPO) Model is a functional graph that identifies
the inputs, outputs, and required processing tasks required to transform
inputs to outputs.

a. Input – variables or raw data relevant to the problem

b. Process – it`s an action on how you process your raw data or variables
c. Output – outcome of the processed variables or raw data

- After your illustration or diagram, discuss and explain the process.

Statement of the Problem
- The first paragraph should state the problem in general thus:

This study will attempt to………..etc. etc.

This study will find out……. Etc. etc

Specifically, the following questions will be answered:

1.
2.
3.
Level of Teachers Competency and Academic Performance of SHS
Students in Practical Research

Statement of the Problem

This study will find out the ….
Specifically, the following questions will be answered:

1.
2.
3.
Hypothesis or Assumptions
- You have a hypothesis if there is a hypothetical or correlational question
in your sub problems. If none, make four(4) to five(5) Assumptions.

Importance and Significance of the Study

- Cite the group of people, agency or entity that would be directly or
indirectly benefited from the study that you will undertake. Start with
the biggest group down to you as researcher.
- Present and discuss this in terms of the benefit derive from the study,
how it improves processes/systems, how the people, entities or agencies
are benefited.
Scope and Delimitation
Scope means the whole coverage or subject matter of the
study. Do not add, do not subtract. It must be exactly the
boundary of your study.

Delimitation means to put further boundaries and

limitations. This can be limited by answering:
a. Who are the respondents and how many are involved?
b. Where is the venue of the study?
c. The time frame that the research would be undertaken.
Definition of Terms
This is a TECHNICAL DEFINITION of the terms that
are vital in the problem and the study. Technical definition
means, how the researcher use the term/words in this
particular study.

Define ALL THE KEY TERMS. If you adopt definitions from

books, cite and acknowledge the authors.

Also spell out the meaning of abbreviations and

accronymns in the definition of terms.
