Communication Theories and Models
in Teaching and Learning Process
What is Communication?
• Is the process of exchange of information among people
• State of exchanging data or information between entities
• An instance of information transfer; a conversation/dialogue
• The process of generating meaning by sending and
receiving verbal and nonverbal symbols and signs that are
influenced by multiple contexts
What is Communication theory?
Statements or set of ideas that
explains principles of communication
Underlying principles or methods of
communication
Is the initiative of communication in
order to fulfill a goal, once fulfilled
the communication ends.
Forms of communication
Forms of communication vary in terms
of participants, channels used, and
contexts
Intrapersonal
Interpersonal
Group
Public
Mass communication

 Intrapersonal-Communication with oneself(triggered by
some internal or external stimulus )It takes place only
inside our heads
 Interpersonal- communication between people whose
lives mutually influence one another (this form builds and
maintains relationships)
Features of Intrapersonal Com.
-It is Interactive, usually more structured and influenced by
social expectations than intrapersonal communication.
-More goal oriented unlike intrapersonal
Interpersonal (Contd.).
It is the most common form of communication

Instances of miscommunication and communication


conflict most frequently occur here
To be competent communicator in this form, you need
conflict management skills and listening skills, among
others, to maintain positive relationships.
Group Communication
Communication among three or more people interacting to
achieve a shared goal
Useful in school settings
 Group work in an academic setting provides useful experience
and preparation for group work in professional settings
Is often task focused, meaning that; members of the group
work together for an explicit purpose
Public Communication
Is a sender-focused form of
communication in which one person is
typically responsible for conveying
information to an audience.
Many people fear to communicate in
public (anxiety)
Limited in developing relationships but
both verbal and non verbal feedback
are received, since it is face to face
Mass communication
Results when public communication is transmitted to
many people through print or electronic media
Print media (printed newspapers and magazines)
continue to be an important medium for mass
communication, although it’s popularity is decreasing
due to the rise of electronic media.
Television, websites, blogs, and social media, Radio,
broadcasts, are other examples of mass communication.

Models of communication
Small structure representing a real process of how
communication process takes place
Simplify the process by providing a visual representation
of the various aspects of a communication encounter
Models serve a valuable purpose for students of
communication
Allow to see specific concepts and steps within the
process of communication i.e. definition and application of
concepts.
Key Elements of communication
Sender-person who sends a message after
encoding
Message -information sent by the sender to the
receiver.
Channel -medium through which the message is
sent.
Receiver-person who gets the message after
decoding.
