8Th January, 2021 Communication Theories and Models in Teaching and Learning Process What is Communication? • Is the process of exchange of information among people • State of exchanging data or information between entities • An instance of information transfer; a conversation/dialogue • The process of generating meaning by sending and receiving verbal and nonverbal symbols and signs that are influenced by multiple contexts What is Communication theory? Statements or set of ideas that explains principles of communication Underlying principles or methods of communication Is the initiative of communication in order to fulfill a goal, once fulfilled the communication ends. Forms of communication Forms of communication vary in terms of participants, channels used, and contexts Intrapersonal Interpersonal Group Public Mass communication Contd. Intrapersonal-Communication with oneself(triggered by some internal or external stimulus )It takes place only inside our heads Interpersonal- communication between people whose lives mutually influence one another (this form builds and maintains relationships) Features of Intrapersonal Com. -It is Interactive, usually more structured and influenced by social expectations than intrapersonal communication. -More goal oriented unlike intrapersonal Interpersonal (Contd.). It is the most common form of communication

Group Communication Communication among three or more people interacting to achieve a shared goal Useful in school settings Group work in an academic setting provides useful experience and preparation for group work in professional settings Is often task focused, meaning that; members of the group work together for an explicit purpose Public Communication Is a sender-focused form of communication in which one person is typically responsible for conveying information to an audience. Many people fear to communicate in public (anxiety) Limited in developing relationships but both verbal and non verbal feedback are received, since it is face to face Mass communication Results when public communication is transmitted to many people through print or electronic media Print media (printed newspapers and magazines) continue to be an important medium for mass communication, although it’s popularity is decreasing due to the rise of electronic media. Television, websites, blogs, and social media, Radio, broadcasts, are other examples of mass communication. School context communication Student-teacher Student-environment Teacher-environment Student-resources Teacher-teacher Teacher-resources Student-student Models of communication Small structure representing a real process of how communication process takes place Simplify the process by providing a visual representation of the various aspects of a communication encounter Models serve a valuable purpose for students of communication Allow to see specific concepts and steps within the process of communication i.e. definition and application of concepts. Key Elements of communication Sender-person who sends a message after encoding Message -information sent by the sender to the receiver. Channel -medium through which the message is sent.
