Advanced Materials
and cost effective design of components for structural and other engineering applications.
Significant research focus is now on producing mass efficient, cost effective structures that
would have significantly lower carbon footprint as well as improved structural integrity.
Multi-material hybrid structures are one of the potential solutions to manufacture mass
efficient structures with increased life expectancy. This project will review a range of different
dissimilar alloy combinations eg. Fe-Al, Al-Ti, nitinol-SS etc, which have significant potential
for future application. Control of interfacial reaction and hence formation of intermetallic
compounds is the key to successful bonding of dissimilar alloys.
The students will be based at the Cranfield Universitys Welding Engineering Research
Centre, (WERC), which has an international reputation for welding research. At the WERC
there is a wide range of state-of-the-art welding equipments including an 8 kW fibre laser,
pulsed Nd-YAG laser, modern arc welding systems and robots.
