Advanced Materials

The document discusses developing multi-material hybrid structures to create more efficient structures. Combining different alloys like Fe-Al, Al-Ti, and nitinol-SS could produce stronger, lighter structures. Controlling interfacial reactions during bonding is key to prevent unwanted compounds. The project will take place at Cranfield University's Welding Engineering Research Centre, which has extensive welding equipment to support the research.

The biggest challenge faced by the materials engineering community today is the innovative

and cost effective design of components for structural and other engineering applications.
Significant research focus is now on producing mass efficient, cost effective structures that
would have significantly lower carbon footprint as well as improved structural integrity.

Multi-material hybrid structures are one of the potential solutions to manufacture mass
efficient structures with increased life expectancy. This project will review a range of different
dissimilar alloy combinations eg. Fe-Al, Al-Ti, nitinol-SS etc, which have significant potential
for future application. Control of interfacial reaction and hence formation of intermetallic
compounds is the key to successful bonding of dissimilar alloys.

The students will be based at the Cranfield Universitys Welding Engineering Research
Centre, (WERC), which has an international reputation for welding research. At the WERC
there is a wide range of state-of-the-art welding equipments including an 8 kW fibre laser,
pulsed Nd-YAG laser, modern arc welding systems and robots.

Advanced Materials

Materials used in "High-Tec" applications, usually designed for maximum

performance, and normally expensive. Examples are titanium alloys for supersonic
airplanes, magnetic alloys for computer disks, special ceramics for the heat shield of
the space shuttle, etc.

1.6 Modern Material's Needs

Engine efficiency increases at high temperatures: requires high temperature

structural materials
Use of nuclear energy requires solving problem with residues, or advances in
nuclear waste processing.
Hypersonic flight requires materials that are light, strong and resist high
temperatures.
Optical communications require optical fibers that absorb light negligibly.
Civil construction materials for unbreakable windows.
Structures: materials that are strong like metals and resist corrosion like
plastics.
