Math Notes For Nature of Roots.

This document appears to be a student's notes from a math class on solving quadratic equations. It provides examples of using the quadratic formula to find the roots of quadratic equations when the discriminant is: zero, a positive perfect square, a positive non-perfect square, and negative. It also shows the work and solution for a specific example problem given by a classmate, agreeing that the equation has two possible solutions since the discriminant is positive.

My class notes.
1. Describe the roots of a quadratic equation when the discriminant is:
A. Zero
-When b² - 4ac = 0 then the roots are real numbers and are equal.
Example:
x² - 4x + 4 = 0 (a=1, b=-4, c=4)
-4² - 4(1)(4) = 0
16 - 16 = 0
0=0

x = -(-4) ± √(-4² - 4(1)(4) )

2(1)

x= +4 ± √0
2

 x= +4 + √0
2

x= 4
2

x=2

 x= +4 - √0
2

x= 4

x=2
B. Positive Perfect Square
-When b² - 4ac > 0 and is a perfect square, then the roots are
rational numbers but not equal
Example:
x² + 7x + 10 = 0 (a=1, b=7, c=10)
7² - 4(1)(10) = 0
49 - 40 = 0
9>0

x = -7 ± √(7² - 4(1)(10) )
2(1)

x= -7 ± √9
2

x= -7 ± 3
2

 x= -7 + 3
2

x= 4
2

x=2

 x= -7 - 3

x = -5

C. Positive But Not Perfect Square

-When b² - 4ac > 0 but not a perfect square, then the roots are
irrational numbers and are not equal
Example:
x² + 6x + 3 = 0 (a=1, b=6, c=3)
6² - 4(1)(3) = 0
36 - 12 = 0
24 > 0

x = -6 ± √(6² - 4(1)(3) )
2(1)

x= -6 ± √24
2

 x= -6 + √24
2

x= -6 + 2√6
2

x = -3 + √6

 x= -6 - √24
2

x= -6 - 2√6
2

x = -3 - √6

D. Negative
-When b² - 4ac < 0 then the equation has no real roots.
Example:
x² + 2x + 5 = 0 (a=1, b=2, c=5)
2² - 4(1)(5)
4 - 20 = 0
-16 < 0

x = -2 ± √(2² - 4(1)(5) )
2(1)

x= -2 ± √16
2

 x= -2 + √16
2

 x= -2 - √16

2. Danica says that the quadratic equation 2x² + 5x – 4 = 0 has

two possible solutions because the value of its discriminant is
positive. Do you agree with Danica? Justify your answer.

2x² + 5x - 4 = 0 (a=2, b=5, c=-4)

5² - 4(2)(-4)
25 + 32 = 0
57 > 0
Yes there are two possible solutions or two roots because 57 > 0.
But let's check using the Quadratic Formula.

x = -5 ± √(5² - 4(2)(-4) )
2(2)

x= -5 ± √57
4

 x = -5 + √57
4 4
