Algebraic Expressions and Equations

An algebraic expression is a name that represents numbers, letters, and symbols. If we take any letter in
English alphabet and use it to represent a number, this is called a variable. A number multiplied to a variable is
called a coefficient. If a letter stands for one specific value, it is called a constant.

Consider the examples below where the variables and constants are identified.
EXPRESSION VARIABLES COEFFICIENTS CONSTANT
1. 4x + 9 x 4 9
2. 3a - 5b + 6 a,b 3, -5 6
3. 8q + 5r - 10s - 2 q,r,s 8,5,-10 -2
4. 7mn + 6m -n +2 m,n 7,6,-1 2
5. 12 No variable No coefficient 12
6. 2ӆr² r 2ӆ No constant

Exercise:

Translate each of the following verbal phrases or sentences into algebraic symbols.

1. x increased by z
2. the product of 9 and a number
3. the square root of 81
4. the square of b
5. p minus 12
6. five more than Ralph’s age 7
7. 28 subtracted from g equals 9
8. five less than a number d
9. the quotient of a and b is c
10. 10 more than a number is equal to 21
