Unit I: Determining Properties of Materials Whether They Are Useful or Harmful

This unit focuses on determining the properties of materials and whether they are useful or harmful. The unit objectives are to describe different material properties, differentiate general and special properties, describe solid, liquid, and gas properties, identify material properties and uses, and explain how properties determine usefulness or harmfulness. Concepts include material properties, special properties of the three states of matter, and categories of useful materials. The unit contains lessons on matter/properties and useful/harmful materials, with activities identifying properties and relating them to uses.

Unit I:
Determining Properties of Materials
Whether They Are Useful or Harmful

Lesson Objectives
At the end of this unit, the students should be able to:
1. Describe the different properties of materials;
2. Differentiate general properties and special properties of matter;
3. Describe the special properties of solids, liquids and gases;
4. Identify he properties of materials then determine their usefulness and
harmfulness; and
5. Explain how different materials with different properties become useful or
harmful to the community.

Concepts Learned
 All substances/materials have their specific properties. It can be general
properties (present in all kinds of matter) and special properties (present
in some materials).
 Special properties of solids are: porosity, ductility, brittleness, elasticity,
luster, magneticness, malleability, flexibility, electrical and thermal.
 Special properties of liquids: fluidity, viscosity, capillarity and surface
tension.
 Special properties of gases: diffusibility, compressibility, low density and
ability to move things due to pressure.
 Three main groups of useful materials: metals (strongest material),
polymers (big molecules made of smaller molecules linked together into
repeating chains), and ceramics (nonmetallic materials).
 Matter is composed of tiny blocks called molecules. Molecules are further
composed of the tiniest part of matter referred to as atoms.

Unit Content:

Other Activities:
1. Create a model of an atom using recyclable materials. Label and color code each
part of the atom.
2. Create your own crossword puzzle using the definitions and samples for each
special property of solids.
3. Create a pamphlet explaining the differences, illustrating the special properties
of liquids, and providing examples for each property.
4. Illustrate a comic strip addressing the proper usage of products based on
the properties of materials.
5. Use local, recyclable solid and/or liquid materials in making a useful
product.
6. Form a group then create a 5-10-minute skit about the uses of products
and their properties.

Activity 1.1
Differentiate five materials and write their properties and uses in the proper column
in the chart below.

Problem: What you need:

What are the special properties of Bottle of water Electric wire
matter? Paper cup Used cloth/towel
Sponge Garter
Piece of chalk Nail
Candle Matches
Spoon
What to do:
1. Drop a piece of chalk
2. Get a paper cup and fill it with water. Dip the sponge into the water.
3. Stretch a garter.
4. Bend the rubber tubbing.
5. Observe he electric wire. Describe it.
6. Carefully light a candle. Wrap the pointed (handle) end of the spoon
using a piece of cloth or towel. Carefully and quickly feel the oval end of
the spoon.
7. Get a piece of nail and place it near a magnet.
NOTE: After performing each procedure, write your observations and
results in the table below.
What have you found out:
Substances Observations Properties
1. Chalk
2. Sponge
3. Garter
4. Rubber tubing
5. Electric wire
6. Spoon
7. Nail and magnet
Conclusion:
What are the special properties of materials in your activity?

Eye glasses wooden ladle
Rags flashlight
Rubber slippers magnetic lock
What to do:
1. Gather all the products you have on your table.
2. Group the products based on the materials they are made of.
3. Name each group based on the materials they are made of.
4. Analyze the properties of the materials used in each group of product
and determine the uses of these materials in daily life.
What have you found out:
1. How many groups were you able to come up with? Specify the groups.
