OBJECTIVES:
❖ To measure the resistance across the voltage source by using a rheostat
❖ Introduction of potentiometer
❖ To determine maximum power output across the rheostat
TO PROVE: “Maximum Power is delivered to load if its resistance is equal to internal resistance of Battery.
❖ Connect one end of the variable resistor to the positive terminal of the power supply.
❖ Connect the other end of the variable resistor to one lead of the multi-meter.
❖ Connect the remaining lead of the multi-meter to the negative terminal of the power supply, completing
the circuit.
❖ Set the multi-meter to the resistance measuring mode.
❖ Initially, adjust the variable resistor's sliding contact to one extreme (minimum resistance position).
❖ Gradually move the sliding contact along the resistor's track, noting the changes in resistance at various
positions.
❖ Record the resistance values corresponding to different positions of the variable resistor.
❖ Introduce additional resistors in series or parallel with the variable resistor.
❖ Observe how the total resistance in the circuit changes with different combinations of resistors and
variable resistor positions.

SIMULATIONS
The experiment demonstrates the functionality of the variable resistor by showcasing how its resistance changes
the total resistance amount in the circuit. The resistance can be continuously varied within its specified range.
Observing the changes in total circuit resistance by combining the variable resistor with additional resistors
showcases the principles of series and parallel resistance. By conducting this experiment, you can understand the
fundamental operation of a variable resistor and its impact on a circuit's resistance, observing the relationship
between the position of the sliding contact and the resistance value.
LESSONS LEARNED
❖ The main objective of this experiment was to determine how does a rheostat work. And how can we change
the resistance of rheostat and how does it affect the voltage across. Then we verified the maximum power
output theorem which states that power is maximum when resistance of given resistor is equal to the
resistance of rheostat. Which is proved in the experiment. AMEN TUFAIL (407513)
❖ In this experiment, I have learned that how the rheostat (variable resistor) can change its resistance and how
that change in resistance, results in change in total resistance of the circuit. We also learned about the
Maximum Power and the condition when Maximum Power will be transferred, that’s (Maximum Power is
delivered to load if its resistance is equal to internal resistance of Battery). EISHAAL SAJJAD (424434)
❖ The primary goal of this experiment was to explore the functionality of a rheostat, understanding how it
operates, and examining methods to alter its resistance and the subsequent impact on voltage across it.
Additionally, we aimed to validate the maximum power output theorem, demonstrating that power reaches
its peak when the resistance of a specific resistor matches that of the rheostat. The experiment successfully
confirmed this theorem. ZEESHAN AMJAD (405971)
