Values Integration

The teacher integrates the value of logical reasoning and problem-solving

in understanding algebraic expressions. Algebra is a fundamental part of
mathematics that helps students develop analytical skills and the ability to
approach problems methodically.

Procedures

1) Present to the students different examples of algebraic expressions such as;

 2x + 3y
 4a2 - b 2
 3x2 y – 5
 X2 + 3x + 4

Ask the students the following questions:

A) What are these expressions called? (Expected answers: Algebraic expressions,

mathematical expressions, polynomials, etc.)
B) What components do you see in these expressions? (Expected answers: Variables,
coefficients, constants, exponents, terms, etc.)

2) Ask the students to identify the variables, coefficients, constants, and exponents in the given
expressions.

3) Let the students examine a set of algebraic expressions representing different types of operations
(addition, subtraction, multiplication) and different types of polynomials (linear, quadratic, cubic,
etc.) Ask the students to evaluate the expressions with specific values for the variables. Ask
them, “How do you find the value of an algebraic expression?” Allow them to express their
opinions and thought processes.

4) Present the concept of Algebraic Expressions

What is algebraic expression?
 The idea of expressing numbers using letters or alphabets without specifying their actual
values. The basics of algebra taught us how to express an unknown value using letters such
as x, y, z, etc. These letters are called here as variables. An algebraic expression can be a
combination of both variables and constants. Any value that is placed before and multiplied
by a variable is a coefficient.
 An algebraic expression in mathematics is an expression which is made up of variables and
constants, along with algebraic operations (addition, subtraction, etc.). Expressions are
made up of terms.
 In general, an expression with more than one term with non-negative integral exponents of
a variable is known as a polynomial.
Examples of polynomial expression include ax + by + ca, x3 + 2x + 3, etc.
 Addition and Subtraction of Algebraic Expressions. We can add and subtract like terms
easily. Example: Add 3x + 5y – 6z and x – 4y + 2z. By adding both the expressions we get;
(3x + 5y – 6z) + (x – 4y + 2z). Separating the like terms and adding them together: (3x + x)
+ (5y – 4y) + (-6z + 2z) = 4x + y – 4z.

5) Ask the students to answer the following:

Activity 1: Find the value of each expression.

If a=3, then 3a=__ If g=1/2, then 12g=__ If b=-2, then 2b+3=__

If x=7, then x+12=__ If a=3, b=-5 then If n=4, m=-5 then

a+b=__ 2(n)(m)=__

Guide Questions:

1. How did you find the answer?

2. How did you evaluate each algebraic expression?

6) Ask the students to answer on the board with the given questions below.

Activity 2: Identify which set contains polynomials and which contains Non- Polynomials.

Set A Set B

2g2 + 3g −4
3 x +3

3
9s 3 s
5
3 1
− 8m −
2 5 m

6 3
2x – 3 x 2 + 5 x 2

Guide Questions:
1. What did you observe in the expressions in Set A? Set B?
2. How did you classify the two sets?
3. Which of the two sets contains polynomials? Non- polynomials?
4. What makes an expression a polynomial?

7) Divide the class into 5 groups and perform the indicated operation.
Activity 3: Find SUMthing Else! and What’s the Difference?
1. 7 x 2 y + 93 yx 2
2. (-4ab) + (-7ab)
3. (a 2+2 a−3 ¿−(a−4 b)
4. (3x – 4y + 5z) – (4x – 2y – 3z)
5. Fernando’s age is represented by 3x + 4. In 5x + 8 years, what will his age be?

Guide Questions:
a. What difficulties did you encounter during the process of solving?
b. How did you arrive at your answer?

8) Let the students explore inside the classroom in a way that they are collecting data in their daily
water consumption by using algebraic expression.
