Possibility with Modal Verbs :


Tahmin, olasılık, ve rica durumlarında modal ların cümlelere kazandırdıkları anlamlar aşağıda ifade edilmeye
çalışılmıştır:

A) Tahminlerde bulunurken aşağıdaki yapıları kullanabiliriz:

He must be in love (= very probable that he is in love)


He could be in love (= possible, but less probable that he is in love)
He can’t be in love (= very probable that he is not in love)

You must be joking (Continious infinitive, -yor olmalı)


It may have been raining (Continious infinitive -yor olmalı)

It must be very cold outside . (Present probability)


You must have been very cold when you were out skiing . (Past probability)

B) Mecburiyetlerden söz ederken aşağıdaki yapıları kullanabiliriz:

You must do your homework tonight . (Present obligation - Yapmak zorundasın)


When I was at school , we had to do homework every night . (Past obligation - Yapmak zorundaydık)

C) Olasılıklardan - tahminlerden söz ederken aşağıdaki yapıları kullanabiliriz:

He can’t be a member of the football team . (Present probability - Takımın üyesi olamaz)
He can’t have been a member of his school football team . (Past probability– Takımın üyesi olamazdı)

D) Yeteneklerden söz ederken aşağıdaki yapıları kullanabiliriz:

Jane can swim really well . (Present ability– iyi yüzebilir)


Jane could swim really well when she was just 18 months old . (Past ability – iyi yüzebilirdi)
