FEM - Tutorial #1 (Hemant Thapa)

This document is a tutorial for the M.E. in Structural Engineering program at Kathmandu University, focusing on the Finite Element Method. It includes exercises on potential energy, the Rayleigh-Ritz method, and various structural analysis problems involving springs and trusses. The tutorial aims to help students apply theoretical principles to practical engineering scenarios.

Tutorial on Potential Energy and The Rayleigh-Ritz Method

1. Assemble equation of equilibrium for the spring shown in Figure 1 by the direct approach.

2. Determine the displacement of nodes 1 and 2 in the spring system in Figure 2. Use
minimum potential energy principle to asemble equations of equilibrium.

3. The truss shown in Figure 3, solve by minimum potential energy principle.

4. Using Rayleigh- Ritz method, determine the expressions for displacement and stress in a
fixed bar subjecte to an axial force P as shown in Figure 4. Draw the displacement and
stress varation diagram. Take 3 terms in displacement function.

5. Determine the displcaement and stress in a bar of uniform cross-section due to self weight
only when held as shown in Figure 5. Use i) two terms, ii) three terms for approximating
polynomial. Verify the expression for total extension with the exact value.
