The document outlines the preliminary design of a two-way slab with dimensions 6m by 5m, using M25 concrete and Fe 500 steel. It calculates the necessary depths for both the slab and a secondary beam based on deflection criteria, resulting in an overall slab depth of 190mm and a secondary beam depth of 125mm. The design adheres to IS 456:2000 standards.

•Preliminary design of slab
Considering a slab of maximum size,
Ly= 6m Lx=5m So, Ly\Lx=6\5= 1.2which is smaller than 2 So, we will design two way slab. Taking Lx=5m M25 grade of concrete (1:1:2),Grade of steel =Fe 500 Tensile reinforcement=0.2% From deflection criteria, d≥ Lx/αβγδλ α= 23, β=1, γ=1.3, δ=1, λ=1 So, minimum depth of the slab = 5000/(23*1*1.3*1*1)=167.224mm Adopt depth =170mm Effective cover=20mm Overall depth =170+20=190mm Thus, Overall depth of the slab=190mm>150mm So, we will design secondary beam ly'= ly/2=6000/2=3000 From deflection criteria, d≥ Lx/αβγδλ α= 23, β=1, γ=1.3, δ=1, λ=1 So, minimum depth of the slab = 3000/(23*1*1.3*1*1)=100.33mm=105mm effective cover =20mm Overall depth =105+20=125mm IS 456:2000 cl23.2.1
