MA107_Tutorial-1

The document is a tutorial for MA107 Mathematics-II at Birla Institute of Technology, focusing on differential equations and linear independence of functions. It includes problems to show linear independence, evaluate Wronskian, and solve various differential equations using different methods. The solutions to selected problems are also provided, demonstrating the application of mathematical concepts discussed in the tutorial.

MA107 Mathematics-II, Session: (SP-19)
Tutorial - 1 (Module I)

1. a) Show that y1 (x) = sin x and y2 (x) = sin x − cos x are linearly independent solutions of y + y = 0.
b) Prove that the functions 1, x, x2 are linearly independent. Hence form the differential equation
whose roots are 1, x, x2 .
c) Evaluate the Wronskian of the functions ex , xex . Hence conclude whether or not they are linearly
independent. If they are independent, set the differential equation having them as its independent
solution.

2. Solve the following differential equations:

0 1 dy
a) y + y cos x = sin 2x, b) (x cos x) + y(x sin x + cos x) = 1.
2 dx
