II. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM

A. Objectives
General Objective
To acquire a summer internship in the Civil Engineering field that will allow me to gain industry-related
skills in multidisciplinary settings as well as to utilize my problem solvings and critical thinking skills in the
said training program.

Specific Objective

To apply what I have learned in school and to set my foot to corporate world. To be informed and
familiar with the facilities and equipments used in the operation and the daily activities in the construction
sites. To understand the kind of technology and the process implemented inside the batching plant and later
on to get involved in the on going operation. This will be a way to discover what would be the science
behind the concrete production with its raw materials. To get an idea of the common strategies and
techniques gathered onto the company. And lastly to know and perceive a real events happening within
people inside an industry .

B. Schedule/Timetable
For the duration of the On-the-Job Training, the schedule was followed by the trainee. The total
number of hours per week is 66 hours. It was expected that I will finished the requirement of 240 hours
at May 16 .But due to the non working schedules such as Labor day(May 1) and this past election

C. Areas of Training
Site Inspection
This is the process by means of observing the pouring site(building, road pavements, drainage,
footing, bored pile etc) and check the form( where the fresh concrete is pour )by measuring and estimating
the length ,area and the volume of a typical structure before the actual day of pouring a concrete. This will
be done to prevent the deficiency and excessive amount of concrete to be ordered by the contractors .

Trial Mixing
Trial mixing is the term for an experimental concrete mixing wherein the other company, suppliers
and manufacturers are agreed and associate with us to test and witness a certain design mix for their
requirements and mainly to try a new raw materials such as admixtures ,cements ,fly ash and aggregates
that will greatly contributes with the strength of the concrete.

Concrete Batching Plant

Concrete Mixing Plant is a large mechanical equipment used to produce concrete, mainly for
ready-mixed concrete. In addition, it is capable for producing Roller Compacted Concrete and Cement
treatment base. Concrete mixing plant includes batch mixing plant and continuous mixing plant.Aggregate
and weighing dosing systems guarantee an optimum and efficient supply of aggregates (such as sand,
gravel, etc).Water is a very important raw material in concrete, water dosing system can accurate add
water to the concrete, usually use volume weighing method.Central mixing system is the heart of every
Batching Plant that is used to mix all raw materials, the twin shaft mixer is a common mixer nowadays,
besides that planetary mixer, pan mixer or even drum mixer is also used as central mixer. In a delivery
system ,to transfer concrete to the jobsite mixer truck is used in most cases. And lastly the central control
system where it handles all the controls to provide types of concrete which are stored in its memory. The
mix design for each grade of concrete is saved.

Quality Control Department

The department that ensures the quality of materials delivered by the supplier and also to take
into account the quality and quantity of raw materials to ordered before it is set to a mixing process. They
are responsible for the monitoring and checking of the actual trial mixing process and prepare necessary
data to create a concrete mix design for future use.

Compression Testing

Compression test is required almost in every project since it gives us a brief idea of the grade and
type of concrete. Many of them do small mistakes in these which includes the different exclusion of
different parameters of concrete, improper procedure for filling and compacting concrete, wrong methods of
testing of concrete and many more. This mainly the output and the result of the days of experimenting and
constant mixing.

PERSONAL
EVALUATION OF THE
TRAINING PROGRAM

68
IV. PERSONAL EVALUATION OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM

A. Reaction Paper by the Trainee to Include Comments on the Following Areas:

1. Professional Learning and Development Achieved

Multitasking
One of the skills that I have learned was to be a multitask person .In order to survive in the real
world ,you need to explore new things .Don’t stick to the common good.We should explore different things
eventhough it wasn’t line up with your career.Learn to adapt and don’t take simple task discourage you
.Remember that you can build strong points and dealt great perception when you atleast know the concept
of such things than not even contribute an idea about it.I opened up this topic because a day have pass
that the dispatcher(the one who is responsible for deploying a transit mixers to a site ) lacks a people
needed to go to a site for coordinating. The reason was ,many of our Site Coordinators have filed their leave
for summer vacation. There was a time that they approach my supervisor that I will be in a site for a
coordinator stuffs.Eventhough I am not that handy about the position but atleast I already know what to
expect in the job.The point is when there is an unexpected event like this and there is a deficiency of labor
workers and departments that need an assistance then maybe someone with a good will and idea about
the said task could be a substitute to still help the company be in a stable production. This would mark from
them that you are a universal person.

Courtesy

One significant things that I have learned in us Filipino is we are very appreciative in general.I
experienced it as I entered the company and the employees are humble and easy to approach on.They
keep on smiling as I walk towards the dispatch room where I will wait for my supervisor. The act of
politeness permits a good vibes towards the person you are interact with. The simple act of say thank you
and goodbye makes them feel that you appreciate their company and you treated them valuable as a
person. One way to get a good impression was when you say their names .Our names was a sweetest
assets that we can heard for it portrays and holds ourselves.

Time Management

We can’t stop the flow of the time but we can manage the use of it.It enables us to complete certain
task to a shorter period of time. The starting time of my OJT was 8 am and so I manage to get awake 5 in
the morning to give myself some time to prepare and take some time for travelling. The usual travel time
from our home to the plant takes for about 2 hours including the expected traffic jams.It was kind of tiring
when you started your day of being late.I admit that I commited some lates for I sleep late night to
accommodate my past reports and awake 6 or 7 am.But for a job there is no valid excuses when you are
late because the point is did you manage your time well and assume those circumstances you went
through in the first place. The schedule within the plant is crucial that the job for a day can even finished for
another day just like the pouring concrete operations.I’m not saying that I am commited to job late midnight
but for some time we’ve finished delivered the fresh concrete night past 7 including the travel time of it.And
so I manage to do my reports during some of my free time or during weekends.Aside from the work in the

69
company ,I also manage the schedule of the deadlines of submission of requirements the school are

2. Modern Techniques, Skills, and Tools Used/Learned

During my training in HPCI, I learned some of the advanced equipment, and processes used and
implemented in the operations of a batching plant. But for some reason I was not able to handle and
operate them since these equipment are still in the process of batching and I don’t want to interrupt with the
operation and scheduled pouring .And so I merely only observed the modern techniques and skills that they
secure to get fast with the operation

Wet mix batching plant

With the two batching plant that has the capacity of 60 to 100 per hour ,the projection of the
volume per day capita was 200 to 500 cubic meter depends upon the weather, climate, and near places to
uphold the pouring of fresh concrete. The batching plant needs to have its supplies ready for use.So the
quality control department our insure that it is not quiet good to have enough supply in the compartment but
atleast have a back up supply to manipulate the unexpected production.Like the fine aggregates commonly
called vibro sand in our plant. This material is constantly been needed for the mix so my supervisor said to
me that I will ordered 10-20 cubic meter of vibro sand just to compensate with the condition.Supposed that I
manage to check and estimate the amount of fly ash inside a silo .Fly ash has its low density than cement
and so my supervisor said that if I have computed the fly ash then I would less it by 200 bags so I will be
able to achieved its theoretical volume. Those techniques that I have learned basically generalized the
awareness and the good assumptions regarding the factors involved in the site .

Trial Mix

There is so many realizations ,strategies and techniques going in trial mixing. The goal of a mixing
process is to have the possible valid result that portrays with the higher projection of strength of the
concrete . In order to establish these goal we need to monitor the amount of raw materials relatively to one
another.Just to have a overview ,the purpose of the aggregates is to have a strong bond with the mix and it
is not simple that if we have bigger aggregates then we have strong concrete. With the help of small
aggregates such as 3/8’’ and ¾ type ,we can fill up the voids or the empty spaces that brought up in the
concrete. We need to prevent the presence of the voids inside the concrete because it will prone to failure
and set honeycomb. The purpose of the water is to establish a desired slump and to adjust the viscous
factor of the mix.I learned in school that the analysis in the concrete mixing is that the slump test would
satisfy 3inch projection .But in the workplace ,I learned that with the basis of their design it is not necessary
that the 3inch slump is the goal just to know if the concrete mix satisfy.Just as I remember we conducted a
trial mix and the slump written in the design is 5’’ to 7’’.Lastly talking about the admixture ,it is an
ingredients used to retard or accelerate the time the concrete will get hard.In the plant we used Prokrete
PSP-PX that helps the consumption of the water and cement because it has an excellent water reducing
property allowing the production of highly workable and high strength concrete. It is a retarder and a
superplasticizer admix. As I exposed in different trial mixing I am fortunate to learned the estimation and the
strategies behind all of this.

3. Equipment, Machinery, Testing Apparatus, etc. Handheld
Wet Batching Plant
The important and reliable equipments that the batching plant will not been able to operate
without. It composed of mixing batching and electric control system. A concrete plant, also known as
a batch plant or batching plant or a concrete batching plant, is equipment that combines various ingredients
to form concrete. Some of these inputs include water, air, admixtures, sand, aggregate (rocks, gravel,
etc.), fly ash, silica fume, slag, and cement. There are two main types of concrete plants: Dry mix plants
and Wet mix plants, and also plants that contain both a transit mix side and a central mix side while utilizing
common material storage points. In our company we used wet mix plant. The comparison between the dry
and wet mix plants is that they both place concrete by pneumatically projecting the material from a hose.
The difference is when water is added to the material. In a wet-mix application, all materials including
cement, aggregate, ad-mixture and water are mixed together before being pumped through a hose and
pneumatically projected. Typically, a concrete truck supplies the wet-mix and it is pumped through a
shotcrete rig for placement. Generally, wet-mix is used for large volume placements with easy access for
construction vehicles. While in dry-mix applications, all dry materials including cement, aggregate, and ad-
mixture are mixed together, conveyed pneumatically through a hose and then, at the nozzle via a water
ring, water is injected evenly throughout the mix as it is being projected. Generally, dry-mix is used for small
to medium volume placements or for conditions with limited vehicular access.
A concrete plant can have a variety of parts and accessories, including mixers (either tilt
drum or horizontal or in some cases both), cement batchers, aggregate batchers, conveyors,
radial stackers, aggregate bins, cement bins, heaters, chillers, cement silos, batch plant controls, and dust
collectors.
The heart of the concrete batching plant is the mixer, and there are many types of mixers such as
Tilt Drum, Pan, Planetary, Single Shaft and Twin shaft mixer. The twin shaft mixer can ensure an even
mixture of concrete through the use of high horsepower motors, while the tilt mixer offers a comparatively
large batch of concrete mix. Aggregate bins have 4 compartments for storage of various sand and
aggregate (rocks, gravel, etc.) sizes, while cement silos are typically one or two compartments, but at times
up to 4 compartments in a single silo. Conveyors are typically between 24-48 inches wide and carry
aggregate from the ground hopper to the aggregate bin, as well as from the aggregate batcher to the
charge chute.
Typical plants are used for ready mix, civil infrastructure, and precast applications.

Maintence Area

It is the portion of the plant that is responsible for the cargo truck, transit mixer, pick up cars and
trucks that have the malfunctions about its machines. The common scenario of why these usually happens
is mainly accidents and the assessment of the engine oil, water, worn out parts ,brake fluids .The drastic
cases the maintenance group would imagine to resolve was the thickening or harden of concrete inside the
tank of a transit mixer. In would be due to the problems took from travelling such as traffic jams ,delays in
site pouring and the like factors. This area would be a busy one.

71
Trial Mix Area
In trial mix area the equipments and its facility our established. There would be a lots of cylinder
molds that have the distinct sizes of 4”x8” and 6”x12” and the rectangular mold which is 6”x21”.We have
there a cement concrete mixer that handles all the trial mix .The four compartments with the aggregates
supply there is present with g1 ,3/4,3/8 and sand type of aggregate. The bags of cement and fly ash are
orderly stored aside and the weighing scale with the 0.01 accuracy is operating. We have there also the
slump cone ,base plates ,a few tamping rods and rubber mallets, trowels and shovels, and used petroleum
for the cylinders. There would be a table for admixtures with graduated cylinder to calibrate it .And lastly we
have there a water tank for the constant supply of water.

Curing Area
Beside the trial mix area is the curing area.Curing area has its big enough curing tank and a small
one.Its purpose is to get the concrete cylinders and rectangulars submerged for curing. The tank is labelled
regarding about the strength of the concrete at 2500psi, 3000psi, 3500psi, 4000psi, 5000psi, 6000psi,
7000psi,8000psi and up to 12000psi.The tank replacing of water was done weekly to make it clean and
remove the deep sitted dirt that remained inside the tank.

Quality Control Department

Here we have the necessary apparatus and equipments for the testing of soils, aggregates and
eventually the concrete. We have there the concrete compression test which is a dial type ,the sieves for all
sizes and a pan. We also have heavy duty drying oven for about 230 degree celsius capacity. It is usually
use to get the moisture content and the absorption of an aggregate. We also have the wash area and the
stockroom for the admixtures and cement supplies.

Truck Scale /Weighing

After the transit mixer loading of the concrete from the batching plant and before going to its
respective site.It is mandatory to set to a platform where it is weighed, then a data transmitted to a
recorder and the checker will then verify if the transit mixer carries the right amount of concrete to
batch. The truck scale has a capacity for about 80000 kgs or 80 tons.

4. Experiences with the Company Personnel Involved in the Training

Talking about the personnels inside the company is fantastic. They are just friendly and talks more
about their experienced in their jobs. They will greet you and their guards will even salute you.At my first day
of training ,the plant manager Engr. Gary Paul Pascual had just set me pointers on what to expect and
what I learned all throught out the training. Then he eventually assigned Mr.Fernando Salinas III to take
over the assistance which end up to be my supervisor.Mr .Salinas is a good mentor .Everytime I have
questions he honestly tell the answer with details. He assist me to the activities with regards about the
deploying and the scheduled of site coordinates and inspection.Every saturday I usually pass the weekly
report by Mr.Hegino Miranda where he read it and eventually sign to it .There is one time happened that he
wants me to edit the text to my daily report. He said that instead of reservoir he implies that it is curing
tank. Then I edit and reprint it cordially. Added that in our company ,the people actually rejoicing if the
operations reach the quota of 400 cubic meter for it actually means that we will get a free lunch tommorow
. Overall rate is spontaneous that the job is even not a work at all but plays a hobby.
72
5. Best Practices Used/Applied

Keeping a concrete plant clean is a constant battle, but one well worth winning. Abrasive dust is
especially hard on solenoid valves and cylinders. Add to that a little moisture, which mixes with the dust to
form a crust that’s hard to remove, and you have a mess that hinders maintenance and inspection
activities. The obvious solution is a truck-loading dust collector. Not only does it keep the plant cleaner, but
it allows truck drivers to spend less time washing down the truck after loading. If you want to dominate your
market, reduce truck and plant cleanup, increase mixer barrel life by as much as 65% and significantly
reduce your concrete plant maintenance, consider adding a central mixer to your concrete plant.A central
mixer will significantly extend truck drum life, all but eliminate dust issues, dramatically improve concrete
consistency and quality and allow you to dominate your market.

6. Discipline Related Solutions Integrated into the Company

The company relies to the ASTM to get solutions and valid procedures in concrete mix design
,apparatus maintenance and operation , and the production when solving related problems.Conforms with
the latest trends and products that was available in the market. The HighPerformance Concrete Inc is
participated with the United Auctioneers Inc. to have its luck and bid a new vehicles with a reasonable
price.Talking about maintenance and over all repair of trucks .The company has the necessary
equipments, facilities and storage rooms for the supply of materials needed.Including with the smokes ,dust
and liquid waste released by the plant. The company together with the DENR set standards to maintain
cleanliness and not to contaminate the environment. They proposed a sprinkler all over the main entrance
to get less with the dust. For the cement inside the silo that emits its dust ,they attached a dust collector. For
the liquid waste there is a pool that collects the water from the batching plant.

7. Strong Points
Based on my supervisor I am excel in ensuring the quality of incoming materials and monitoring of
the current supplies of raw materials .But I guess I am in the good mood when having the hands on activity
like coordinating,inspection and trial mixing.

8. Weak Points and Suggested Solutions

My weak points are dealing with effective communication .My hesitations due to communications
are whether I may not go with the topic and I wouldn’t been able to contribute my idea and explain it in a
good and smooth way.In order to manage this weakness ,after I encountered things that I don’t understand
or I am clueless about .I will take a research and read its concept. For instance ,I am curious about the used
of the concrete air meter that I saw in the laboratory .I will check its brand name and labelled details and I
made a research about it so that I have an idea. Also for example that I encountered words that my
supervisor was mentioning.Others of my weakness is working and understanding slowly. For instance,my
supervisor has telling me something .I understand it the way he say it but in the actual work I used to asked
questions related to it.And so to aid with my weakness everytime I have to listen I would list it and set
pointers to a scratch paper.

RECOMMENDATIONS

74
V. RECOMMENDATIONS
A. Potential of the Company as a Training Ground
1. Availability and Appropriateness of Facilities, Equipment, and Machinery

All facilities in HPCI are working and well-secured. Most importantly, the machineries and equipment used
in all department sections are maintained, inspected, and cleaned everyday to ensure that they operate
well. All the materials are readily available in the place. And the materials for repairs and maintenance are
available in the storage room. You can manage a great experience here in the company when you choose
to gain knowledge about the production of concrete and ready mix concretes. For the future vision of the
plant ,they are canvassing a plantation for the production of concrete hollow blocks and the mechanism for
it must see for details.

2. Company Personnel Cooperation

All employees work with their potential to get with the stable production of the plant. Each of the
employees whether the helper gives the time to satisfy his/her supervisor. If there was a problem ,it was
then called to the higher personnel to check and if there is a things that needs to be approve then the plant
manager or a consultant will be responsible for the case. All of the works are assigned in a respective
person that he/she can manage the certain task.As I had mention the company has a certain goal and it is
to reached the daily quota or a fixed share of something that a person or group is entitled to receive or is
bound to contribute. If the 400 cubic meter volume of concrete or above was delivered in that day then all
the people have their free lunch in the company associate canteen another day. The company strategy
among its worker is one way to stretch out the stress within the workplace. And it is one way to grant
everyone with their great workmanship.

B. Duration of Training
Personally, I think that two hundred forty (240) hours of OJT work is enough to learn the principles and
fundamental concept that are practiced by Quality Control Department. With the facilities I am abled to see,
operate and have a preview of the common equipments that is used in a batching plant.

C. Suggestions for the Improvement of the Training Program

For the company ,it would be better if the OJT trainees are assisted that we are well informed with
what to expect in each of the days of working. It is for us to track and to know the lessons that we may
absorb all thorugh out the training. This would help us to have a list of works in orderly manner.Supposed
that the day 1 activity is somehow different from day 2 and if there is a continuation of the work form day 1
to day 2 then atleast it has an improvement. In my case I was assigned in quality control department where
there is a constant activity going there.

75
D. Advise to Future On-the-Job Trainees
I would advice to the future On-the-Job Trainees especially those who took up Civil Engineering
that make yourself valuable to be with the good company that offers a lot of opportunity that is line up with
your career.Wish to be with the company that has been tested by your school to handle a trainees.Don’t
think that whatever I may enter a company atleast I have completed my OJT.This woudn’t help you when
you are making your documentations.
