My name is Drake Hottenstein; I am seventeen years old and attend Humboldt High

School. I will attend Wichita State University and major in biomedical engineering. I live with

my dad and stepmom and I have two sisters there. At my mom and stepdad’s place I have 3

brothers and a stepbrother. I am the oldest of all my siblings so it can get pretty chaotic with all

my siblings. I always try my hardest in everything and set hard goals for myself; that is why my

goal for college is a 4.0 GPA just like it was for high school.

I have had a 4.0 all throughout high school along with a high attendance rate. I have

always exceeded in math and science classes, but I enjoy science classes the most. The most

challenging classes have always been English classes as I struggle with writing long papers. The

classes I find most interesting are the science classes and the business classes. Throughout my

years in high school I have been involved in FFA, FCA, and NHS. I spent a summer doing

volunteer work at the Allen County Regional Hospital. Volunteering at the hospital had a huge

influence on my career choice because after that summer I knew I wanted to work in the medical

field somehow.

I am pursuing a college education not only because I must attain a degree for my career

path that I want to follow, but also to have the unique experience of college. I also love learning

more and obtaining more knowledge. I will be majoring in biomedical engineering at Wichita

State University. I chose that degree because it is a part of the medical field, which I have always

wanted to be a part of, and it has to do with engineering, something I have always been interested

in. I chose Wichita State because it has the best biomedical engineering program in Kansas. I

would like to get a Master’s Degree in biomedical engineering.

Once I obtain my biomedical engineering degree, I want to go into the engineering of

prosthetics. I chose this path because it seems the most interesting to me. It is also changing
drastically with the rapidly improving technology. I also feel like prosthetics make positive

differences in people’s lives. I wouldn’t mind working anywhere as long as it isn’t a huge city

with expensive living.

I believe I am worthy of this scholarship because of the dedication and hard work that I

have put in for college and the rest of my future. I have shown great success in the past and show

great potential for the future.
