Instructions
1. This paper consists of sections A, B and C with a total of eleven (11) questions.
2. Answer all questions in section A and B and two (2) questions from section C.
3. Cellular phones and any authorized materials are not allowed in the examination room
4. Non-programmable calculators may be used.
5. Write your Examination number on every page of your answer sheet(s)
6. Where necessary the following constants may be used;
(i) Acceleration due to gravity (g) = 10m/s2
(ii) Coefficient of linear Expansivity of the brick
= 1.2 x 10-5K-1
(iii) Speed of light wave = 3 x 108m/s

SECTION A (15 marks)

3. (a) i) State the principal of moment
ii) How the moment of the force can be increased?
(b) How would you use to find the weight of a wooden rod?
(c) A meter rule is found to balance at its 49cm marks. When a mass of 100g is suspended at its
10cm mark. It balances at 36cm mark. Calculate the weight of the ruler. (04 marks)

4. (a) Explain each of the following observations;


i. It is difficult to unscrew wheel nuts in the morning, while it is relatively easy to
unscrew them on a hot day. (02 marks)
ii. A glass test tube was heated over a Bunsen Burner flame. Cold water was then quickly
poured into the test tube. Explain why the test tube would break when cold water is
poured in.
(b) A brick (30cm x 18cm x 10cm) is at 20° C. If the brick is put in a furnace at 150° C, determine
the new dimensions of the brick.

5. How is speed differ from velocity?

(b) A car travels at a constant velocity of 20m/s for 100 seconds and then accelerate uniformly
to a velocity of 30m/s over a period of 50 seconds. This velocity is maintained for
125 seconds, before the break in applied and come to rest with uniform
deceleration in 25 seconds.
i. Draw the velocity time graph for journey described above. From the graph find.
ii. The acceleration in each section of the journey
iii. The total distance travelled by the car.
iv. The average speed over the whole journey.
6. (a)Develop a formula connecting wave velocity (V) frequency (f) and wavelength (λ).
(b) Briefly explain the terms magnitude and intensity as used to describe earthquake.
(c) The figure 2 below is a profile of Radio wave, Determine;
i. The amplitude of the wave

7. (a) Briefly explain when does alpha (α −decay ¿ occur .


(b) The arrangement below in figure 3 shows four bulbs used as Christmas lights on
Christmas eve. If the key K is closed and unexpectedly bulb C blows off, what will
happen to bulbs A, B and D?

(c) Two cells each having an e.m.f of 1.5V and an internal resistance of 2Ω is connected in
parallel. Find the current when the cells are connected to a 1Ω resistor.
8. What is meant by the following terms;
i. Astronomy
ii. Asteroid
iii. Global warming
(b) Mention three effects of global warming
(c) i) What is the major cause of global warming
ii) Briefly explain three measures that can be taken to control global warming.

SECTION C (25 marks)


Answer only two (2) questions from this section.
9. (a) State the following rules

(b) i) Why does a transformer work with a.c only?
ii) What is the purpose of soft iron core to the transformer?
(c) A transformer is used in the 240V a.c supply to deliver 8A at 90V to a heating coil.
Calculate;
i. The current in the primary coil
ii. The power in the primary coil
iii. The efficiency of the transformer
10. (a) Briefly using a clear diagram, explain how reverse bias of a p-n function occurs.
(b) Most transistors in use today are n-p-n. Give reason for this.
(c) Give four clear differences between n-type semi-conductor and p-type semiconductor.
11. (a) i) What is meant by half life of a radioactive substance?
ii) A radioactive element has a half life of 3 min. If the initial count rate is 512 counts per
min, how long does it take to reach a count rate of 64 count per min? what fraction
of the original number of atoms is left at that time?

(b) A radioactive nucleus of an element “Y” of atomic mass 218 and atomic number 92 emits
an alpha particles followed by beta particles. What is the atomic number and mass
number of the nuclear formed after the emission?
(c) Each of the following sentences describes a particular radiation from different radioactive
source. In each case name the types of radiation describe and give reason to support
your choice.
i. Penetrates through a sheet of paper but stopped by aluminum sheet
ii. It is neither deflected by magnetic field nor electric field.
iii. It is deflected towards negative side of an electric field.
