A Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is a board that supports and connects electronic components using conductive tracks and pads, typically made from materials like fiberglass or composite epoxy. PCBs come in various types, including single-layer, double-layer, multi-layer, flexible, and rigid, each serving different applications across consumer electronics, medical devices, and aerospace industries. The document outlines the characteristics and uses of different PCB types, emphasizing their importance in modern electronic devices.

PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD

(PCB)
Joseph F. Morco
https://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/printed-circuit-board-PCB
Printed Circuit
 Printedcircuit is a
conductive pattern
attached to the
insulating substrate
surface to connect
electronic
components.
Printed Circuit Board (PCB)
 PCB is the board base
for physically
supporting and wiring
the surface-mounted
and socketed
components in most
electronics.
PCB

A PCB mechanically supports and electrically

connects electronic components or electrical
components using conductive tracks, pads
and other features etched from one or more
sheet layers of copper laminated onto and/or
between sheet layers of a non-conductive
substrate.
Both as a physical support piece and as the
wiring area for the surface-mounted and
socketed components.
PCB

PCBs are most commonly made out of

fiberglass, composite epoxy, or another
composite material.
PCB

PCB is a copper laminated and non-

conductive Printed Circuit Board, in which all
electrical and electronic components are
connected together in one common board
with physical support for all components with
base of board.
Most PCBs for simple electronics are simple
and composed of only a single layer.

Most sophisticated
hardware such as
computer graphics
cards or motherboards
can have multiple
layers.
PCB – Where?

TVs
Radios
Digital Cameras
Cell phones.
Consumer electronics
Computers
Different types of PCBs are used in a
variety of other fields, including:

Medical devices
Industrial machinery
Lighting
Automotive industries
Aerospace industries
Classification/Types of PCB

Single-layer PCBs Flexible PCBs

Double-layer PCBs Rigid-Flex PCBs
Multi-layer PCBs High-frequency PCBs
Rigid PCBs Aluminum-backed PCBs
Single-side PCB

 Single
sided PCB is the basic simple PCB, parts is
layouted on one side and the circuit is on the other
side.
Single-layer of Single-sided PCB

 Oneside of the base material is

coated with a thin layer of
metal.
 Copper is the most common
coating due to how well it
functions as an electrical
conductor.
Double-sided PCB

 Double-sided PCB circuit are the gateway to higher

technology applications. They allow closer touting
traces by alternating between a top and bottom layer
using vias.
Double-layer PCB

 Holes drilled through the board allow

circuits on one side the board to connect
to circuits on the other.
Multi-Layer PCB
Multi-layer PCB

 Theseboards are then secured together with a

specialized glue and sandwiched between
pieces of insulation to ensure that excess heat
doesn’t melt any of the components.
 Multi-layer PCBs come in a variety of sizes:
 Small / four layer
 Large / ten or twelve layer
 Largest / fifty layer thick.
Rigid PCB

 RigidPCB has a certain mechanical strength, and the

parts installed with it have a certain ability of
resistance to bending, and it is usually at a state of flat
when used.
Rigid PCB

 Printedcircuit board that are made out of a

solid substrate material that prevents the
board from twisting.
 Ex:
 Computer motherboard
Rigid PCB

 Themotherboard is a multilayer PCB

designed to allocate electricity from the
power supply while simultaneously allowing
communication between all of the many
parts of the computer such as CPU, GPU
and RAM.
Flexible PCB

 FlexiblePCBs are made of soft laminated plastics or other

soft insulating materials. The boards made by the flexible
PCBs can easily be bent and stretched, which means that
people can bend optionally them when using the flexible
PCBs according to the installation requirements.
Flexible RCB

 Likerigid PCBs come in single, double or

multilayer formats. As they need to be
printed on a flexible material, they tend to
cost more fabrication.
Flex-rigid PCB

 Combination of flexible circuit and rigid circuit.

 Flex-rigid
boards consists of multiple layers of flexible
PCB attached to a number of rigid PCB layer.
 Itis used in cell phones, digital cameras and
automobiles etc.
Flex-rigid PCB

 Consist
of multiple layer of flexible PCBs
attached to a number of rigid PCB layer.
High-frequency PCB
 High-frequency PCB materials often
include FR4-grade glass-reinforced epoxy
laminated, polyphenylene oxide (PPO)
resin and Teflon.
 Teflonis one of the most expensive
options available because of its stable
dielectric constant, small amounts of
dielectric loss and overall low water
absorption.
Aluminum-Backed PCB

 Aluminum-backedPCBs are designed in

much the same way as their copper-backed
counterparts.
Aluminum-Backed PCBs
Advantages:
 Low cost
 Environmental friendly
 Heat dissipation
 Material durability
