Expressions and Identities


Day 1: Introduction to Algebraic Expressions
 **Objective:** Understand constants, variables, and algebraic expressions.
 **Class Activities:** Real-life examples of expressions. Identify parts of expressions.
 **Homework:**
 1. Define: variable, constant, term.
 2. Write 5 algebraic expressions from daily life (e.g., 5x, 3x + 2).
 3. Identify constants and variables in: 4x + 7 − 2y

Day 2: Terms, Coefficients, and Exponents


 **Objective:** Identify terms, coefficients, variables, and exponents.
 **Class Activities:** Breakdown of expressions like 6x² + 3xy − 5.
 **Homework:**
 1. In 6x² + 3xy − 5, identify:
 a) Total number of terms
 b) Coefficient of x²
 c) Constant term
 2. Write 3 algebraic expressions and label coefficient, variable, exponent.

Day 3: Types of Algebraic Expressions


 **Objective:** Classify monomial, binomial, trinomial, polynomial.
 **Class Activities:** Sort expressions into groups.
 **Homework:**
 1. Classify: 4x, x² + y, 3a + 2b − 4, 7
 2. Write 2 examples of each type.

Day 4: Degree of a Polynomial

 1. Find the degree of:
 a) 4x² + 3x
 b) x³ + x² + x + 1
 c) 7
 2. Write a polynomial of degree 4 with 3 terms.
Day 5: Identity – (a + b)²
 **Objective:** Understand and apply the identity (a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b²
 **Class Activities:** Area model and numeric examples.
 **Homework:**
 1. Expand using identity:
 a) (x + 3)²
 b) (a + 4)²
 2. Verify the identity by expanding both sides.

Day 6: Identity – (a − b)²


 **Objective:** Apply identity (a − b)² = a² − 2ab + b²
 **Class Activities:** Compare with Day 5 identity.
 **Homework:**
 1. Expand using identity:
 a) (x − 5)²
 b) (m − 2)²
 2. Verify each using multiplication.

Day 7: Identity – (a + b)(a − b)

 1. Simplify using identity:

beds.

 1. Draw the square garden divided into 5 rectangular beds.
 2. Write expressions for:
 a) Perimeter of the entire garden (side = x)
 b) Perimeter of one rectangular flower bed

Day 12: Recap and Assessment


 **Objective:** Review and assess learning.
 **Class Activities:** Revision game and short quiz.
 **Homework:**
 1. Revise all 3 identities:
 - (a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b²
 - (a − b)² = a² − 2ab + b²
 - (a + b)(a − b) = a² − b²
