Information about Canary Islands
The Canary Islands, or the Islas Canarias as they are know in Spanish, are located off the coast of Africa and are governed by Spain. The archipelago consists of seven major islands, two minor islands, and several small islets.

The Canary Islands are a popular holiday destination with package holidays available all year round.

The Islands are all volcanic and the beaches are of black volcanic sand.
Canary Islands Surfing Info and Details
There are surf spots on all the islands. Their far south location in Europe allows quality swells the time to form in the Atlantic. The hot summers and the warm winters (in and out of the water) and consistent swells make the Canaries an ideal surfing destination.

The main surfing destination are the larger islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

The best swells are from the north, and although these swells often have long wave periods due to the distance travelled, they can be spoiled by the north easterly trade winds. Surfing in the Canary Islands is often done first thing in the morning, to avoid the afternoon winds.

Many of the waves found in the Canary Islands are fast, powerful ones, breaking in shallow water. Sharp rocky reefs and urchins litter many breaks, making many of the spots unsuitable for novice surfers.

The islands now have many surf trip providers who cater for those looking to surf the islands. If it's lessons, the whole package, or simply board hire the option is available.
Surf Equipment Required for the Waves in Canary Islands
If you are heading here for a surf trip it is worthwhile bringing at least one other spare board, some ding repair, and booties for the reef and urchins. You'll also need sunscreen and a rashguard for sun protection during the summer months.
